Enjoyable biopic starring Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Cicely Tyson, and others told in the third-person style by an 80+ year-old woman, Nitty (Jessica Tandy), about the times, people, and events of the last 70 years, in a old deserted southern community called Whistle Stop, Alabama. Evelyn (Cathy Bates) meets Nitty in a nursing home while visiting her husband's aunt. A loving and tender, mother/daughter type of relationship develops throughout their numerous hours spent together as Nitty relays the storys and events that unfolded since about 1919. The story surrounds the lifelong relationship between Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth Jamison (Mary Louise Parker). She tells the story of a transcendent friendship between two ... All of these various elements become cemented together around Idgie and Ruth, Ruth's son Buddy Jr., and the Whistle Stop Cafe, which was the beating heart of the community, and the never solved murder of Ruth's abusive husband, Frank. The story begins in 1919 when Idgie's big brother Buddy, Ruth's boyfriend, was hit and killed by a train. Idgie withdrew into silence and mourning for years only to be released from her grief when Ruth returned years later and befriends her. Idgie by now is a "wild as weeds" young woman - a free spirit, who Ruth calls out and befriends, only to discover a kindred spirit. Together they become best friends. Ruth soon, unexpectedly informs Idgie that she is to be married following the summer and Idgie feels betrayed that she is losing this new found friendship. As the next few years go by, Idgie eventually gets the courage to travel to Georgia to visit Ruth, only to find out that she is living in an abusive relationship and is being beaten by her husband Frank. When Idgie threatens to take action, Ruth sends her away, not wanting to make trouble for her dying mother who lives there too. Soon a letter from Ruth arrives asking for Idgie to take her away from her situation. Ruth's mother died, and she is pregnant and no longer can stand the abuse. The characters of the story all become alive now; Sipsie (Cicely Tyson), her son Big George, Sheriff Grady, Smokey Lonesome, a local HoBo, and Curtis Smoot, the Georgia policeman looking to solve the disappearance of Frank Jamison. He has been after Idgie and Big George for years ever since being told that Idgie threatened to kill Jamison if he ever hit Ruth again. These, and all the others that wrap up the story that spans 70+ years of life. The old lady that Nitty was accompanying in the nursing home, Mrs. Otis, has died, and Nitty returns home only to find her house gone. It had been condemned and torn down years before, nobody ever thinking that Nitty would ever return. Evelyn now wants to bring her to stay with her and her husband in her remaining years. In the final scene, the two women see a jar of honey next to Ruth Jamison's headstone, a sign symbolizing the eternal friendship between Idgie and Ruth. This was a very enjoyable film and I highly recommend it. ....less

Anniversary Edition! Great Movie
We have watched our VHS version quite a few times. This is the Anniversary Edition on DVD of Fried Green Tomatoes! It will bring a few tears to your eyes! In this movie, an elderly woman at a nursing home tells a tale of two woman to a middle-aged woman played by Kathy Bates. It is set in the south around the 1930s and brings up topics of bigotry and men. One of my favorite quotes of the movie is from Kathy Bates - I'm older than you and I have more insurance - as takes over a parking spot. In fact, I have seen this scene and quote used in insurance commercials. I never heard of fried green tomatoes until this movie and these two women open a restaurant where this is a speciality. I traveled to NY and one of the deli's had this and I got to try it. Really Good. You will ... We have watched our VHS version quite a few times. Fried Green Tomatoes
This is a wonderful story of women of all ages maturing and learning to be comfortable with themselves. This "Extended Version" did not include the Whisle Stop KKK parade that was in the theater released version. Other cut scenes for the VHS version have been returned except the part of the father leaving the house with the baby and going to his truck. I believe that all the cut parts should have been restored and not just the few snibbits that were. Overall it is a well done movie from main character acting to directing to extras' acting and period scenary. This movie also has men give pause to how they treat their wives. In most ways this is a "Chick Flick" but it is entertaining for all. It's a good tale for people of all ages to see and enjoy. ... As I told the kids in Sunday School, Jesus was a Jew and not a Christian. So if an organization, like the KKK, says they are christians but they hate blacks and Jews, they are saying they hate Jesus and thus are not Christians. You can't have Christians without Jews. Plus Our Christian God is also the Jewish God and also the Muslim God. Read about Abraham and Sarah. This is where Jews and Muslims parted ways. My daughter has some "Tawanda" in her. She and my wife love this movie.

Fried Green Tomatoes - A Heart Touching Movie
Fried Green Tomatoes is a movie that ranks up there with other great movies. I found it to have a very interesting story line and was true to the 1930s. The back hills country stories is being told by an elderly lady living in a nursing home. Ms. Threadgoode (the elderly lady) is visited by a house wife at the end of her rope. Ms. Threadgoode tells her knew found friend, Evelyn, stories about two women and how they became the best of friends. She goes on to tell Evelyn about a devastating accident, abuse, illness, murder, a cover up, and about the bond & friendship between two women that is rare. As Evelyn listening to the stories it begins to open a door in her mind that she didn't know was there. She is motivated by the stories and starts making life changing decisions ... Fried Green Tomatoes is a movie that ranks up there with other great movies. I found it to have a very interesting story line and was true to the 1930s. It not all about fried green tomatoes.

A wonderful movie based on the novel by Fannie Flagg, who also appears in the film. Unforgettable cast with Jessica Tandy and Kathy Bates. A lot of funny as well as heart-touching moments .
