Mystery writer and gamesman Andrew Wyke (Laurence Olivier) has found the next target for his mind games: Milo Tindal (Michael Caine), a nice young British hairdresser who is having an affair with Andrew's neglected wife, hoping to eventually marry her. Professing to want to release his wife to him, Andrew lures Milo to his country house to play a very nasty trick--but Andrew's trick comes back to haunt him. Featuring a revelation viewers will have to fight to hold back when recommending this mystery to friends, SLEUTH will greatly appeal to drawing-room murder fans, who will find the movie thrilling with its unexpected twists and turns. Both the unscrupulous and unremorseful Andrew and Milo, sweet but up to Andrew's challenge, shine in each other's company, shrugging off each wicked verbal barb before zinging back another. Both Caine and Olivier are brilliant in their roles; the former was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. SLEUTH is based on the play by British playwright Anthony Shaffer.

The Gods of Intellectual Thriller!
I have bought this dvd internationally and wow! I never thought this old 1972 classic is really one piece of pure art! Mind boggling hairdresser versus cunning and snievelling mansion owner! Pitting the plots of each other's minds! No boring dull momnet for this movie even though it is only played by 2 major actors throughout the entire movie...with a minor irrelevant role of the Detective Doppler.The best ever performance of Sir Laurence Olivier! Too bad there are no more such actors left to resurrect him and his talents!too bad the newly revised movie of SLEUTH Starring Jude Law didnt meet up with the thriller of the origianl one even with Michael Caine still managed to put the best parts...Duely to the part thats been sorely missed...Sir Laurence Olivier's Godlike Acting Prowess thats ... They don't make 'em like this anymore!
It's amazing how two actors can sustain this level of suspense for 138 minutes with little more than a few rooms in an old British mansion and a some props. The script, though a bit slow in the beginning, seems to be written expressly for Sir Lawrence Olivier, playing the part of mystery novelist Andrew Wyke, and Michael Caine playing hair dresser/womanizer Milo Tindle. Unless you have seen this original version of what could loosely be classified as a mystery, it is difficult to envision the power of these two great actors and the degree of suspense which can be unraveled within the simplist of scenarios. I initially saw "Sleuth" in the 1970's when I was in college and it has remained one of my favorite movies of all time. It wasn't until I won a virtually mint copy of the DVD on ebay ... It's amazing how two actors can sustain this level of suspense for 138 minutes with little more than a few rooms in an old British mansion and a some props. But now it is and has been and I'm a happy camper! Way recommended!!!

I enjoy the actors work and the period in time the story takes place as the props used in the film are one of the entertainment components. All is good!

Don't Miss This One
This was a great movie then and still is now. Patience is required and the instant gratification crowd may not like it but this is how movies used to be made. Try it and see for yourself.

Excellent suspense!
Michael Caine and Sir Laurence Olivier are not to be missed in this cult classic psychological drama. Its great stuff for those who enjoy mind games in an intelligent fashion with great twists in the plot. Who'd want to miss two of our greatest actors in formative roles in any event! Get you hands on it!
