One of my favorite books in a lifetime of reading!
This is one of my all time favorite books. Told from the points of view of main characters, the personalities are real, most of them complex, & compelling. The history based story (not a real family, but I’ve known similar individuals…) tells a part of our nation’s & World’s tragic but little known story. I grew up in this period of time, & remember reading about the events—with a very different viewpoint from the American media of the time. The author has a clear bias (with which I strongly agree) but she gives facts & opinions from both sides—at the time & in retrospect—all a part of the intricately woven story. Her language weaves a web of beauty & sorrow & inspiration. The details have such amazing circular connections that it is a wonderful book to teach & discuss. I’ve read it 3 ... The book is a compelling family saga, a sobering picture of the horrors of fanatical fundamentalism and an insightful view of an exploited country crushed by colonialism and manipulated by a bastion of democracy. Nathan Price is a sanctimonious, foolhardy fanatic determined to convert the natives to Christianity, a plan that is doomed from the start by Nathan's self-righteousness. The story arc develops through the alternating, first-person points of view of Orleanna Price- Nathan's powerless wife- and her four daughters. ... As the girls become acquainted with the villagers, especially the young teacher Anatole, they begin to understand the political climate in the Congo, the brutality of Belgian rule, the nationalism briefly enjoyed in the election of Patrice Lumumba, and the secret involvement of the Eisenhower administration in Lumumba's assassination, culminating in the installation of the villainous dictator Mobutu. "The Poisonwood Bible" presents a wonderful mix of diverse characters. The inevitable outcome of the forced imposition of Christian theology on the natives' indigenous faith gives the novel its pervasive irony. Kingsolver's artful integration of humor through the children's misapprehensions of their world keeps the book from becoming a bleak meditation on colonialism. The book is more than an excellent novel. It is a marvelous commentary on the clashes that can occur between culture, politics, and religion.

TERRIFIC READ! GET THIS BOOK!
My favorite book, I've read it 3 times so far! Ms. Kingsolver takes us with the Price family into the Congo, and we are priviledged to read the story through the eyes of each character. I laughed, and I cried, and I rejoiced, and I reflected. What lessons each character teaches us! I've travelled as a missionary to Africa, and the author's descriptions take me right back into the jungle. I didnt want the book to end, I wanted to stay with the characters on and on. Few books pull you into the action the way this one does. An excellent book, I highly recommend it. I've purchased several copies & given them to friends.My favorite book, I've read it 3 times so far! Poisonwood Bible
Recently I lived in central Africa. This book comes the closest to how I would describe the local native life. Hard and true, I loved it. I often think how one day I would love to write a book about our experiences there, but this book has outdone my potential for words. It is truly a gem, truthful, brutally honest and highly descriptive ....you can 'taste' the splendour and the sadness of Africa through the eyes of 5 courageous women who experienced her..... Kingsolver magnificently reigns!!Recently I lived in central Africa. This book comes the closest to how I would describe the local native life. Hard and true, I loved it. I often think how one day I would love to write a book about our experiences there, but this book has outdone my potential for words. It is truly a gem, truthful, brutally honest and highly descriptive ....you can 'taste' the splendour and the sadness of Africa through the eyes of 5 courageous women who experienced her..... This book was recommended to me by a colleague. The book is cleverly and beautifully written. It weaves a fantastic novel, told through the five main characters who are the wife and four young daughters of a preacher who go on a mission to the Belgian Congo in Africa. There are many themes running simultaneously throughout the story such as the total alien culture this family finds there and has to adjust to. Another is the stubborn,resolve of the preacher to remain in this awful environment against the advice of church officials to spread the word of God. At the same time the Congo is claiming its independence from Belgium and racial tension is about to explode. This hard cover book arrived in less than a week after I purchased it from Ebay.
