Made in the shadow of both Vietnam and Watergate, THE CRAZIES is a grim allegory about a government conspiracy against the public that ultimately results in genocide.The story is set in director George Romero's home state of Pennsylvania. In the film, a government plane carrying a dangerous virus crashes near the small town of Evans City. The virus finds its way into the town's drinking water, turning everyone who is exposed to it into a murderous lunatic. Firefighter David (Will McMillan) and his pregnant wife, Judy (Lane Carroll), remain unaffected but face great danger in trying to escape the town, which has been quarantined by the US army, whose members lurk around every corner, clad in gas masks and protective suits. The President is often depicted as a detached talking head, offering no hope to citizens trapped by the mistakes of his administration.Similar in tone and structure to his DEAD trilogy, Romero's film overcomes a visibly limited budget to create a colorful 1970s genre film that neatly captures the feeling of governmental distrust that was characteristic of the Vietnam era. With both a social message and plenty of splatter, THE CRAZIES is an underrated but appealing horror film.

Scare the blood-thickening wits out of you.
Coming off two forgotten films in a row, George A. Romero was able to bounce back with his finest work since “Night of the Living Dead.” Shot during the social and political climate of the early 1970s, “The Crazies” is a flawed but disturbing thriller about a conspiracy against the public that eventually leads to genocide. A government plane transporting an unsafe virus code-named “Trixie” is released near the small town of Evans City, Pennsylvania. Once the virus spreads into the town’s drinking water, ordinary local citizens become murderous freaks and the U.S. Army turns it into a quarantined warzone. A firefighter (W.G. McMillan) and his pregnant wife (Lane Carroll) remain unaffected but are desperately escaping the town from the hazmat-clad soldiers who are hunting and shooting the ... Will the frantic scientist (Richard France, who played another one in “Dawn of the Dead,”) find a life-saving cure? Will the couple survive at the end? Just watch and find out. Returning the themes that Romero established in his zombie movies, “The Crazies” is yet again less of a horror film and more of a film about governmental distrust, isolation, and rural warfare. Despite a very low budget and continuity errors, Romero conveys his social message while keeping up with our expectations through and through. Unlike most modern horror films of today, McMillan and Carroll are likeable characters that you cared about. You wanted them to live at the end. You wanted them to escape from the soldiers. And these are people that you sympathize with. Although it may lack the slickness of the Dead series or “Creepshow,” “The Crazies” still manages to scare the blood-thickening wits out of you.

Mostly For Romero Completists...
This was one of Romero's earliest feature films, and it's odd that while he didn't write the story, it owes a lot to Night of the Living Dead. The set-up is basically the same, but with a little more blame to be thrown around. As in 28 Days Later (which owes a lot to both The Crazies and NotLD) it's a dangerous virus gone astray, and the military is there to try to contain it all while the locals are turning into, well, Crazies. Said crazies are generally homicidal in nature, unable to reason, very energetic... basically the same as the Rage virus victims in 28DL. The low budget definitely shows but the energy is there, and the characters all behave in reasonably justifiable ways. That's important because so much of what everybody does ends up being counter-productive and eventually ... The DVD doesn't have a lot of extras, as you'd expect for a film this old, but there's a short doc and interview with Lynn Lowry, who went on to become something of a cult star. The disc also includes the original theatrical trailers and a couple of TV spots, which are taken from some VERY rough prints. The print of the film itself is a little rough, but for an el-cheap-o exploitation film from 1973, made quick n' dirty for the drive-in market, it's more than acceptible.

Originator of biological warfare.
The Crazies is a diamond in the ruff. And almost forgotten like some of George A. Romero's other low budget films. This movie proves that you can make a very entertaining an believable movie out of barely any money and an unrealistic story that becomes completely real through what you see on screen. This movie isn't as good as Dawn of the Dead in my opinion but would have to be the closest thing you can get to it with guns and shooting scenes looking very similar. With non stop scenes being a war between crazies and soldiers. Everyone is considered crazy meaning they've been effected with a virus that makes a person simply go insane and start to attack and try to kill anything in sight. Crazies also can use guns and one small town is a constant warzone with the only hope being dropping a ... The Crazies is a diamond in the ruff. And almost forgotten like some of George A. The Crazies
If you like B grade disaster or zombie flicks, this one is for you! Early 70's, maybe late 60's movie of the "secret gubmint bioweapon goes amiss" genre. George Romero of the Dawn of the Dead movies made this one also. Instead of flesh chomping zombies, the "infected" this time become walking retards, laughing and giggling. The first thought is "oh no, stoned hippies are attacking" (one of most people's worst nightmares). Don't expect fast changing camera angles, explosions and Will Smith and a Chinese dude going "wicki wicki wicki", this is an OLD SCHOOL picture. If you liked any of the Living Dead movies by Director George Romero,I strongly recommend "The Crazies". Here you have a movie that fits in somewhere in between Night of the living Dead & Dawn of the Dead. Nice to see a color film by Romero too!(Night of the livind dead was B&W) In this film the threat is not zombies but a real chemical developed by the Military,that either kills you or turns you insane! The towns people that are infected turn against the military in a showdown,while a small band of people try to escape the barrior set up around the city. Paranoia simular to Night of the living dead & the real treats are alot of the actors are from Night of the living dead movie.Stunning cult film actress Lynn Lowry is also featured!
