Edward Zwick directs this sumptuously designed, action-packed period epic that stars Tom Cruise as Captain Nathan Algren. Algren, a former Civil War hero, is adrift in 1870s San Francisco after the war, a lost soul struggling to stay afloat in a booze-soaked stupor. When he is recruited by the Japanese government to train the Emperor's army, he departs for the unknown shores of Japan and begins training the soldiers in American military tactics. But these skills are useless against a band of samurai rebels led by the proud warrior Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), and Algren is easily defeated. He is taken to a remote samurai village where he learns samurai warrior codes and ways of life, developing a deep bond with Katsumoto and sharing philosophical conversations with him. Caught between the feudal culture of the ancient samurai warriors and the encroachment of modern society, Algren is forced to choose between his own culture or Katsumoto's. THE LAST SAMURAI is lavish in its dramatic period costumes and intense performances, and will thrill fans of both historical drama and action films.

Spiritual Movie...
Cruise is an American Civil War soldier who is hired by the Japanese to teach them the American fighting technique in order to eliminate the rebellious Samurai, who's old fashioned ways and values are angering the greedy politicians who seek to Westernise Japan. Tom does his job, but is captured by the Samurai during one of the many great fight sequences. During his time with the Samurai, Tom learns of the value of the Samurai's traditional ways, and forms a friendship with their leader, a man who's name escapes me but who did a remarkable job. I found myself wanting to see more of him than of Cruise. This movie shows why all the CGI in the world can't reproduce the feeling of watching 500 men fighting each other with guns and swords. The action sequences are phenomenal, and will blow you ... I was loving this movie so much up until the very end, which betrayed the film and gave us a "Hollywood" ending which upset me so that I nearly forgot all the good things that came before it. It was so typical, and it made me mad. But having had time to reflect, it is one flaw in a magnificent movie.

The Last Samurai
An unusual fiction based upon several true historical accounts. I found the film sensitive and engaging as it explores the changes from an ancient to a modern society. The film is about an American Civil war soldier, Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise)who finds friendship and solace as he lives among the Samurai of Japan. If one does not care for subtitles or violence then I would not suggest seeing this film. Great movie with alot of action and a good story line.I do not usually like Tom Cruise movies, but he was very good in this one.
