"A rich, dramatic tale that ranges from the personal to the literally earth-shaking." -Janet Maslin, The New York Times "[A] fine account . . . • Historical Entertainment

The book was in much better shape than I expected, although it had been stacked too long in a cock-eyed position, giving the book an odd curvature. The story itself is very motivational, particularly for those of us who have a few years invested. Most of us are not in the financial position of Roosevelt, to gallivant off on a trip of exploration and adventure, but reading about the trip and the suffering that the explorers endured and survived makes for historical insight.

  • Excellent reading

If you are a Teddy Roosevelt fan this is a "Must" for your collection, if you are interested in learning more about him, this definitely a book to read to find out more about one of the most interesting well rounded presidents so far, Cowboy, Adventurer, Police Commissioner, Politician, Conservationist, and Author. Not many could have made this journey and survived, much less written a nail biting book about it.

  • Bully

Still another reason why this man was the greatest President ever. I was "Deeeelighted" to read about: Leather boots saved the lethal bite of an amazon snake. Near death experience again for the Man. Kermits love of his Father. At his age most men would be ending their life...Not teede. A must read for adventure, Madness, Murder, and greed.

  • Fascinating snapshot from the life of T Roosevelt

This book is masterfully written. It recounts Theodore Roosevelt's nearly fatal expedition into the Amazonian rain forest. The author paints a fascinating naturalistic picture of the expedition's surroundings (she has written for National Geographic). Of even greater value, I think, she aptly develops biographical themes along the way which shed insights into the lives of the expedition members and provoke introspection. The tale is as inspiring as it is captivating.

  • Roosevelt's life is worthy as it could be...a great man, a man of character!

A great read as well as information about a truly great human being...adventurous, compelling!
