Product Information

A first-ever revealing and candid look at the life and career of one of Hollywood's brightest and most beloved stars, Maureen O'Hara. In an acting career of more than seventy years, Hollywood legend Maureen O'Hara came to be known as "the queen of Technicolor" for her fiery red hair and piercing green eyes. She had a reputation as a fiercely independent thinker and champion of causes, particularly those of her beloved homeland, Ireland. In 'Tis Herself, O'Hara recounts her extraordinary life and proves to be just as strong, sharp, and captivating as any character she played on-screen. O'Hara was brought to Hollywood as a teenager in 1939 by the great Charles Laughton, to whom she was under contract, to costar with him in the classic film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She has appeared in many other classics, including How Green Was My Valley, Rio Grande, The Quiet Man, and Miracle on 34th Street. She recalls intimate memories of working with the actors and directors of Hollywood's Golden Age, including Laughton, Alfred Hitchcock, Tyrone Power, James Stewart, Henry Fonda, and John Candy. With characteristic frankness, she describes her tense relationship with the mercurial director John Ford, with whom she made five films, and her close lifelong friendship with her frequent costar John Wayne. Successful in her career, O'Hara was less lucky in love until she met aviation pioneer Brigadier General Charles F. Blair, the great love of her life, who died in a mysterious plane crash ten years after their marriage. Candid and revealing, 'Tis Herself is an autobiography as witty and spirited as its author.

  • 'tis Herself

This woman's beauty, abilities, and grace is so captivating! I have always had a crush on her, even when I was a small boy! As I read about her, she is more enchanting. I wish I would have known her in small way, even to meet her once would have been a dream come true. The writing style of this book is very good and flows in such a way that keeps you wanting to know more about her life! I truely do like this book and would reccommend this book as a fine read! A++

  • Biography of the QUEEN OF TECHNICOLOR

As a fan of classic Hollywood movies of the 1940's,I purchase all biography's of the golden age. MAUREEN O'HARA has always been in the top 10 of my all time favorite movie actresses. Her book was honest and revealed material I had not previously known about her life and career. The color portrait on the book jacket cover shows the most beautiful technicolor actress to ever appear in films. I would highly rate this book to any movie fan of classic movies of the past. • Wonderful Hollywood nostalgia

What a wonderful, nostalgic book for fans of Hollywood's Golden Age. In her typical no-punches-pulled manner, Maureen O'Hara takes us back to that era and adds anecdotes about her own films and insights into the on- and off-screen personalities of her best friend (John Wayne) and the man who became her greatest director and worst enemy, the enigmatic John Ford. Truly one of the best Hollywood bios I've ever come across -- I'm sure my fellow geezers who love the old movies will also love "'Tis Herself."

  • A career well done.

I have always liked Maureen O'hara and this book makes me like her even more. She is such a lady.
