When the Lord's Resistance Army refuses to stand down, Childers organizes a militia to protect the children. Action film disguised as something else
From reading the other reviews, there seems to be a trend towards commenting on the man that the movie is based upon. Having no knowledge other than viewing the film, I will stick to the film only. Gerard Butler portrays a violent biker-addict with absolutely no redeeming features. We first see him as he is released from prison, giving a guard a parting insult. Then he is picked up by his wife in a compact car, where he proceeds to have sex with her in the passenger seat on the side of the road (very classy). Upon arriving home, he shows no interest in his daughter and flies into a rage when he finds that his wife is no longer working as a stripper ("you better get back there and earn your tips"). But as with most addicts, he is simply trading one addiction for another. Soon, he is building a church, then he is off to Africa for missionary work. Definitely more commitment than what you see from your average church goer. While there, he witnesses the horrible conditions that the people must endure, as civil war rages in the area. And finally decides to do something about it. This is an action movie. Pure and simple. The main character makes choices that provoke violence, rather than preventing it. He buys land and builds an orphanage in a war zone, rather than locating the compound further from the fighting. This subjects the orphans to night raids from the bad guys. If he wants to play Rambo, why not set up a military compound between the children and the bad guys to the north? We see glimpses of his trips back to the states, where he tries to raise money. Several scenes depict him as a man on the edge; manic and desperate, willing to sell his family's future to finance his mission. I wondered how the camp survived while he was in the states. The movie made it appear that the preacher was the only thing standing between the children and oblivion. Yet they survived his trips with relative ease. Is it possible that the preacher was the target of the raids, and that his mere presence begat more violence? If you like action movies where the line between good guys and bad guys is drawn very clearly, then this one is for you. If you are looking for inspiration and godliness, you may have to squint a little, forgive a lot, and read between the lines. For myself, it was hard to watch the main character in the beginning. There was just nothing to like about him. Towards the end, he was every bit as despicable, but with a different agenda. Three stars. Recommend to action fans only. Somewhat entertaining, but I'm not going to enlist.

Machine Gun is RIGHT...
Very good film, docu-drama, and, in keeping with the current conventions,,, at the end credits, I like they way they put up pictures of the Real preacher. He is a diamond in the rough, and his wife is the most long suffering person on the planet, to put up with his quest.

Machine Gun Preacher - an inspiration to us all.
This is not only an excellent movie but an excellent true story of a tortured soul that found peace in the faith and then had the guts to make a difference in war torn Sudan. THis disciple of Christ uses guns to bring about justice and still saves little children. The dramatic contrasts of his life, the passion he exhibits should be an inspiriation for all. An excellent movie and an excellent life. NancyThis is not only an excellent movie but an excellent true story of a tortured soul that found peace in the faith and then had the guts to make a difference in war torn Sudan. inspiring true story of one man taking on another man's war
Pastor Sam Childers visited my church and was amazed by his life story and what he is doing for the Children of Sudan. I wish I had a 10th of his faith, courage and strength. The movie is great and the book 'Another Man's War' is great as well. I was very impressed by Gerard Butler's portrayal of Pastor Sam and Michellle Monaghan's portrayal of Lynn Childers. I've recommended this movie to all my friends and family to see.Pastor Sam Childers visited my church and was amazed by his life story and what he is doing for the Children of Sudan. I wish I had a 10th of his faith, courage and strength. The movie is great and the book 'Another Man's War' is great as well. I was very impressed by Gerard Butler's portrayal of Pastor Sam and Michellle Monaghan's portrayal of Lynn Childers. I've recommended this movie to all my friends and family to see.
