One of Ben Bova's best sci fi books
This is the type of 'hard' sci fi I like. Characterization is good, both interesting and believable. Not deep, but that suits my preference in sci fi. It's deep enough that the characters avoid being cartoons, soap opera or romance novel. Most of all it takes full advantage of the wonder of its topic: Jupiter and the idea of Jovian life, with nods to moons such as Europa. I would have liked more exploration in my special sci fi interest -- first contact with alien (completely alien, not humanoid, not of human origin even remotely, not even life as we know it) intelligence. Either the book should have continued further (for my taste), or dropped the religious sabotage subplot. Be that as it may, it was good as far as it went.This is the type of 'hard' sci fi I like. Take a trip to another planet.
Ben Bova writes another interesting story involving a member of our planetary system. I have read two of his other books a few years ago and liked them, so I was looking forward to this book as well. The trials, tribulations and training of the personnel provides for believable characters and a good read. The storyline is well done making you come back for more, wanting to find out what happens. This is a great bedtime read in the sense that the chapters are short enough so you can read at least one before turning in for the night. The story revolves around the life of Grant Armstrong Archer III, and he makes a special friendship with a very unique and pleasantly surprising character named Sheena. I will leave the secret for you, the reader, to discover. Story Outline : Ever since ... Ben Bova writes another interesting story involving a member of our planetary system. As he got older, he narrowed his interest to the study of black holes. It was the death throes of giant stars that fascinated him. If he could learn how collapsed stars warped space time, he might be able to figure out how to use such warps for interstellar travel. The governing body of the western world at this time is the New Morality, a coalition of censorious, evangelistic, control-freaks who have a do-as-we-say-because-we-know-better-than-you attitude and hide behind Scripture to do their contemptuous deeds. They can’t stand scientists, because they supposedly contradict the Word. Being that Grant is both an aspiring scientist and a Believer, they offer him a full scholarship to the university of his choice, with the understanding that he would, in return, give them four years of Public Service in the field of his study…astrophysics. When he graduated from Harvard with high honors and a new bride, Grant was looking forward to, and expecting to go to, Farside Observatory on the Moon to fulfill his commitment, study black holes, write his thesis and acquire his doctorate. Needless to say, he was shocked to learn that he was going to a research station that has been orbiting Jupiter for the past twenty years. He was going to be 700 million kilometers from his wife on their closest approach to Earth! To make matters worse, he was being sent there as a spy for the New Morality to find out what the scientists there were trying to achieve by sending an unauthorized manned probe to the planet itself. Were they trying to find life on the planet? If so, that would wreak havoc with the zealots and they couldn’t have that. This put Grant in a morally conflicting position as a scientist and a Believer. After arriving at the space station and doing a menial job for awhile, Grant finds himself as an integral part of the next manned mission to Jupiter monitoring the propulsion systems. Then, due to an unexpected death, he is immediately inserted as a crew member that will be subjected to the buffeting winds of the planet’s atmosphere and the intense, crushing pressures of its vast ocean. His immediate future holds many questions that will be answered as the story unfolds. Overall, this is a recommended read to transport you to another planet, learn some very interesting facts about the planet, and help take you away from the stresses of the day.
