Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's revered Middle-earth saga captures the dark mood of the books extraordinarily well. So begins his adventure, as he must elude Mordor's black riders in an effort to prevent the ring from returning to its owner and thereby signaling the end of Middle-earth. Even with the mighty wizard Gandalf as his ally and faithful friends Merry, Sam, and Pippin by his side, Frodo is still up to his hobbit neck in peril.Bakshi took a big risk when deciding to direct the beloved Tolkien tale, but the resulting work effectively brings Middle-earth to the screen. Bakshi combines painted live-action footage with various styles of animation to create a very unusual collage-style texture for this film. Viewers should be warned that the story ends rather abruptly, leaving room for a sequel that was, unfortunately, never filmed. Still, for fans of fantasy, this moody, atmospheric version of the novels captures the shadowy hues of Tolkien's work in a way that is unique and worth discovering.

The Lord of the RIngs VHS 2001 Clamshell
This movie along with the animated Return Of the Kings makes a wonderful introduction into the world of Middle Earth for youths of all ages! This edition of the movie/book/trilogy takes you thru basically the first half of the trilogy. Complete with the Return of the Kings animated version (also by Ralph Bakshi)you get a very good rendition of the trilogy. It is actually alot closer in plot than the live action movies. It is also much less graphically violent. I own this set and purchased this copy for my 5 year old nephew. I feel he is too young for the live action version of the movie and of course much too young to read the books. Since he plays with the action figures (left to him by his uncle)I wanted him to have some knowledge of the story and also I am hoping to spark interest so ... This movie is in true Bakshi fashion (like the great movie Wizards) with a mixture of styles using animation and live action clips. The music is wonderful. The story is simply told as if it was Cliff notes. It is easy to follow and easily allows the watcher to read the books to fill in the rest of the story. No made up plot lines or undo emphasis for drama. The violence is animated and vague and with supervision suitable for today's youth (perhaps I am too protective on that issue anyway). I hope that someday both movies come out on DVD.

Lord of the Rings Animated version
The VHS tape of The Lord of the Rings (animated version--1978) was like new even though some 10 years old. Even the case looked new. Evidently it was re-released in 2001. I haven't seen it since the 80's. Sure, the live action version is better, but this one is fun too. Too bad they never made the second half of the story in this format.
