Product Information

An alluring tour de force: a brilliant debut novel told with seamless authenticity and exquisite lyricism as the true confessions of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha. Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love, always elusive, is scorned as illusion. Sayuri's story begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. Through her eyes, we see the decadent heart of Gion--the geisha district of Kyoto--with its marvelous teahouses and theaters, narrow back alleys, ornate temples, and artists' streets. And we witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup and hair; pouring sake to reveal just a touch of inner wrist; competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it. But as World War II erupts and the geisha houses are forced to close, Sayuri, with little money and even less food, must reinvent herself all over again to find a rare kind of freedom on her own terms. Memoirs of a Geisha is a book of nuances and vivid metaphor, of memorable characters rendered with humor and pathos. And though the story is rich with detail and a vast knowledge of history, it is the transparent, seductive voice of Sayuri that the reader remembers. A dazzling literary achievement of empathy and grace by an extraordinary new writer.

  • What a story; spirit overcoming tragedy and cruelty.

What an epic story about the circumstances of Chiyo as a nine year old taken from her family and "tipsy" house at the fisherman's village of Yoroido Japan in the 1920's when a child could be sold into servitude. She and her sister are taken to Gion - Chiyo into a Geisha house; her 15 year old sister Satsu, unwanted at the Geisha house, is relegated to a whorehouse in the same town. There Chiyo meets a kindly man who gives her money to buy a shaved ice cone to take her troubles away as she sits at the bridge lamenting her loss - that of not having kept her meeting with her sister to run away, and her fate at the Geisha house; suffering at the hands of a cruel Geisha jealous of anyone more beautiful. Chiyo's distinguishing characteristic of grey-blue eyes makes her a high commodity in the ...

  • Memoirs

I love to read into peoples lives. Their thoughts, actions, and decisions are what makes a person who they are. This book was simply wonderful. I ended up buying it because I owned the paperback and the pages were falling out of it. My roommate at the time bought it for me sayin that if I liked the movie I'd like the book too. Look, if you enjoy anythin about Japan and wonder how a Geisha lives her life then this is an excellent book. You are able to follow along as a male author perfectly describes a female Geisha and all of her life problems. It is a wonderful read and I'd suggest it to anyone, even people who don't seem that interested. Give it a chance! You'll love it!

  • Engrossing Start to Finish.

It is hard to believe this book is a work of fiction. The author writes as if he were "Within the Walls" of the Okiya in Gion. A Book I can use as reference as well as entertainment. I cannot say anything more than "Read It".
