A first generation Blu-Ray Disc player that's way past its prime...
There may be people who are seeking a used Blu-Ray Disc player as an alternative to buying a new one. While this may be a good idea if you want to save some money and keep used electronics from being dumped, you may want to steer clear of first generation offerings because of potential product support problems owing to the age of the player, potential usability issues (slow responsiveness, etc.), and plain wear and tear. The Philips BDP9000 is a first generation model that's actually a rebadged Samsung BD-P1000. They are so much the same internally that the most recent firmware for the Samsung BD-P1000 is fully compatible with the Philips BDP9000 and can be used to keep the player able to play the latest titles, albeit with a few amusing side effects; specifically the player's splash ... There may be people who are seeking a used Blu-Ray Disc player as an alternative to buying a new one. While this may be a good idea if you want to save some money and keep used electronics from being dumped, you may want to steer clear of first generation offerings because of potential product support problems owing to the age of the player, potential usability issues (slow responsiveness, etc.), and plain wear and tear. The Philips BDP9000 is a first generation model that's actually a rebadged Samsung BD-P1000. They are so much the same internally that the most recent firmware for the Samsung BD-P1000 is fully compatible with the Philips BDP9000 and can be used to keep the player able to play the latest titles, albeit with a few amusing side effects; specifically the player's splash screen will bear Samsung branding and the menus will change to Samsung's design. However, despite the changes, the player is still fully operable, including working with the remote control that came with the player, and the updated firmware will improve compatibility with more titles. Speaking of the Samsung firmware, Samsung remains the only recourse for keeping this player's firmware up to date; Philips appears to no longer invest any effort towards keeping this model updated as the latest Philips firmware for this model is 02/19/2009 whereas the latest Samsung firmware that will work is dated 04/08/2011. Updating the player with the Samsung firmware is easy, just download the firmware ISO from Samsung and burn the ISO to a CD-R or a CD-RW using a CD burning utility. If you've updated the firmware on this player before using the Philips ISOs, then you can do this with the Samsung ISO as the process is the same. One very notable problem is that the player's hardware seems to have some difficulty working with the menus of some Blu-Ray Disc titles. For example, the player takes a very long time to load "The Towering Inferno" and when, finally, the player does finish loading from the disc and goes to the menu, the menu itself is sluggish and, at times, unresponsive. There's no internet connectivity with the player at all, so you can't use BD-Live features available on some Blu-Ray Disc titles. The player can support many different flash memory cards, such as SD cards, the files that the player can support are limited to MP3s and JPGs. The player doesn't support other kinds of media files. In addition, the player may not be compatible with SDHC cards. For DVD playback, picture quality is okay. My only gripe is its rather long layer change on dual layer discs. For Blu-Ray Disc playback, picture quality is excellent with HDMI, which is generally typical of Blu-Ray Disc players. With the component video output, the picture quality remains excellent, though it may be just a tad softer in sharpness compared to using HDMI. In all, I would not recommend this model as a choice unless the price was REALLY low to reflect the fact that this is a first generation model and, as such, may have first generation warts. I would recommend paying no more than $30, maybe $40, and that includes S&H, for a BDP9000 in excellent condition as a low end Blu-Ray Disc player sold from Wal-Mart will easily outperform the BDP9000 while only costing around $60-$80.

Philips Blue Ray
I like the way this player looks and how many different outputs there are on the back of it. Whether or not you have a HDMI receiver, this player can adapt to what you do have. The only thing I really do not like but I get over are the load times. But once it gets going the picture and sound are great. I did not feel like paying $1000 bucks for the Sony blue ray and I think that the Philips is a comparable alternative.I like the way this player looks and how many different outputs there are on the back of it. Great Product!
We decided to buy the Philips blu ray player because we a Philips HD TV. The picture quality is amazing and the blu ray player works great. The only thing I didn't like was that we had to download software to update it so we could play blu ray movies on it. It wasn't a big deal after we figured out what we were doing and talking to customer service. Other than that we're really happy with it.

The unit has seperate input for SD memory and jump drive. has excellant range of features. remote handles well with menu and affords good user options.

Great Player
The picture quality is amazing and the blu-ray player works great. The only thing I didn't like was that we had to download software to update it. But because it is free, it is OK. Tt takes few minutes to do it.
