Your mission is simple, yet complex: investigate Wee Ming Lam's disappearance, track her down, and bring her back alive. She disappeared days before her eighteenth birthday; it is believed Wee Ming has fallen into the vice of Shan XI Protectorate, a hedonistic cultist group. Failure is not an option as she is the daughter of a powerful Triad leader, a predominant political force in Hong Kong. Mr. Lam has hired the services of three money-hungry mercenaries: Hana Tsu-Vachel, a young covert operative specializing in infiltration missions; the highly decorated ex-military officer Royce Glas; and Deke Decourt, a psychotically aggressive weapons expert with little knowledge of discretion. Together they will investigate the Lam family dynasty, infiltrate seedy criminal headquarters, and traverse through unimaginably horrific locations. Using a revolutionary Motion FX technology, Fear Effect is an action-packed third-person adventure through a streaming world filled with problem solving, unreliable sources, mystery and suspense. Whereas Resident Evil's pre-rendered backgrounds are static, Fear Effect utilizes streaming data for an alive, cinematic feel; steam spews from broken pipes and lights flicker on and off producing shadows and spotlights. Rather than featuring a traditional health based system, the Fear Meter relays the overall fear of Hana and her mercenary companions. As tension builds (walking through dimly lit hallways and coming in contact with enemy forces), Hana's breathing becomes increasingly heavy and the heart beats at a faster pace. The Fear Meter displays algorithms based on color; whereas green reflects a sense of calmness, red signifies an extreme intensity where Hana is killed with a single gunshot. Stressful situations are overcome with common sense and caution. Because Hana is an infiltration expert, players should do their best to remain unseen; enemy detection and running out of ammunition during a gunfight significantly increases the Fear Meter. Confidence is regained by collecting important inventory items, solving hazardous puzzles, and overcoming enemies using stealth. Enemy confrontations are handled with a dynamic targeting system. When the targeting icon appears, Hana has locked an enemy in her sights and can successfully eliminate the target. Represented by a red targeting icon, players can execute one shot kills by sneaking around enemies and remaining unseen. Weapons include pistols, sub-machine guns, assault rifles, and shotguns with a series of melee weapons pertaining to a given character; Hana slices enemies with a knife, Deke pummels them with brass knuckles, and Glas uses a Smak-Jack. Fear Effect also utilizes a unique action system for solving puzzles and overcoming various obstacles. When a character comes in contact with an interactive item, the Action Indicator flashes a corresponding action; usable items are prompted with a take icon, ladders are climbable, and you can look at TV monitors. Important items are stored in a comprehensive inventory system that players can pull up at anytime without disrupting the action. Overcoming problems and puzzles is important for story progression and the confidence of your character. Logically placed into the given environment, puzzles incorporate using the correct keycard on the corresponding door, replacing burnt fuses, and defusing bombs by snipping the correct wires. There are also timed and reflexive puzzles where one false move signifies the destructive and violent demise of Hana, Glas, or Deke. Good Alternative but Not Perfect
I recently purchased these replacement cases for the Fear Effect games since I recently purchased Double Helox but didn't know it was a loose copy until it arrived. Now I must say on terms of box quality and paper quality for these replacement cases they're really good. My only two complaints is that the text for both covers for the back of the cover is essentially touching the edge of the paper. It's clearly streached out to to accommodate for a different box size. Also for the cover art of the second game the reverse side seems to have some poorly done photoshop as I can see some really hard pixelated edges on the characters arms where they overlap. That aside I'm glad I was able to get a hold of these and would be interested in buying other replacement cases like this despite the ... Great game! Great price!
Pretty great game. I used to own it years back but sold it over time, though I never finished it. So here I am now collecting all those oldies but goodies, and for the price and quality, I couldn't pass this one up! Fear Effect is a game using cell shading technology which was revolutionary during its time. This graphic style gives the 3D cartoon effect. Similar to Resident Evil in terms of control, the game is very simple to play. Your character is given the task to save the daughter of a Triad Leader in future Hong Kong; that is, recapture her from her kidnappers and rip randsom money from her father. But there are far sinister and inhuman dealings falling into play than just a kidnapping. Take control of 3 different characters spanning 4 discs. Instead of a life meter, you are given a ... Long story short, it's a great addition to the classic game library.

Beyond Expectations
I’ll be honest, I stumbled upon this game by accident. Not long ago I was simply just looking to see what films would be based on video games and this one came up. I knew I’d seen advertisements of it in the past, but I really had no idea what it was about nor had I played it. I read about what the film would have been about, and it sounded interesting, well as far as films based on games go. So I became curious about the game and looked it up, it looked real neat, and I’m sad I didn’t pick it up sooner. I payed about 4 dollars for it and it was way beyond the price I’d have normally payed if I new how wonderful this game was, if it wasn’t for that price. So if you like games that are cell shaded or cartoon/anime like you may like this games style. The music is awesome, it fits the game and the feel of the game captivating you from event to event. This game offers a good challenge as well for those who seek challenging games. I my self am not one for a challenging game, and I saw the “game over” screen more in this game than in another game I’ve ever played. But it wasn’t to a point that was annoying, in fact it just encourages one to play again. If your like me you may want to play it again right after you put it down. The only thing that I didn’t really like was the controls, it moves like resident evil. Which isn’t bad for a game like resident evil, were the objective lies in solving puzzles and not so much as a shooter. But this game is a puzzle game and a shooter, and relies heavily on its shooting aspect, and it can become nerving to aim or turn around fast enough for that kind of action. The character moves in slowly when turning in a square like pattern; incase one has never played Resident Evil. But after a while I became good at the controls and it was almost second nature. Besides that the game was really cool, and well beyond my expectations, it even offers a pretty neat and semi original storyline. I definitely recommend this game. To those who seek adventure games, puzzle, survival horror or the like.

Fear Effect
I owned this little gem of a game back in 2000 when it came out. This is one of those great games that no one bought. The graphics were amazing for the time. The backgrounds are all hand draw or water color, not sure which one but regardless it looks amazing. Game play is "Resident Evil" style in the movement of the player. Four discs of deep story and action packed gameplay. Do yourself a favor and pick this up.
