Directed by Barry Levinson, BUGSY tells the true story of legendary New York mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel. Visiting Hollywood "on business," the reckless and volatile Bugsy is drawn to Tinseltown and the glamour of the movies. Leaving his wife and kids in Scarsdale indefinitely, the womanizing Bugsy spends his time on movie lots and at Hollywood extravaganzas, contemplating his own potential stardom. But soon he falls hard for strong-willed actress Virginia Hill (Annette Bening), who isn't content with mistress status. A road trip to a down-trodden joint in the Nevada desert in a town called Las Vegas leads Bugsy to dream of building a world-class casino and turning the town into a moneymaker. Together Bugsy and Virginia--with backing from the mob--start building The Flamingo hotel and casino, hoping that legal gambling and five-star entertainment will entice the masses and rake in big bucks.

He runs back to tell his friends what he "got" during his moment of the ideas light-bulb switching on in his creative genius: To build the GLAMOUROUS Casino, the Flamingo, right there in wide-open Nevada! Warren Beatty as the Gangster Ben "Bugsy" Siegal pulls off quite the convincing performance, sure looks like the "Method" acting technique of "being" the character. Ben Kingsley portrays Meyer Lansky, the real "brains" of keeping the syndicate operating in almost total obscurity yet efficient when necessary. Annette Benning is Virginia Hill, the treacherous woman that shows why the real Gangsters of that era told and wrote that they were more afraid of their ... An absolute classic!!!
This isn't just a great gangster flick...it's an amazing movie period! The number of Academy awards, Oscar nominations, etc. surely set it above anything from the 90's until now. It's a must see for any fan of the gangster/crime genre, dramatic biographies and certainly anyone interested in the origins of Las Vegas.

This movie is a surprise from jump. Warren Beatty is the ultimate seducer, clothes horse, handsome, glib leading man and this DVD is in my collection forever. I have seen it more times than Jimmy Toback who wrote it. I bought the 2 disc version updated in 2000. Barry Levenson, James Toback, Warren Beatty and yes, Annette Bugsy Beatty invite you into their inner circle as they explore the inner workings of the complex Benjamin Siegel. I am Mr. Beatty's generation. He was a heart throb when I was a teen ager. I saw him in Splendor in the Grass when it came out originally. Bugsy is as much a romantic comedy as it is a gangster movie. This movie doesn't glorify Bugsy it explains him. Glamour is indeed the disguise because these are good looking exciting personable people doing very psychotic ... This movie is a surprise from jump. You identify with his frustration, you turn away when they kill him. You would never want to be in his inner circle but you like him. Annette Bening was incredible as Virginia Hill through out the picture. She can play anybody any day of the week. She is stunning as Virginia Hill. The lady has a different face for every nuance. The music in this film is a masterpiece composed by a master. I learned what an "adhominem dialectic" is. Look it up! I hope they rerelease this film soon. It is fifteen years old and it didn't do that well in 1991. It has stood the test of time. It is a great story. Ben Kingsley is perfectly cast as Meyer Lansky. Waren Beatty should have gotten an Oscar. He and Mrs. Beatty met on the set and it is an absolute joy to watch them in Bugsy and later in 1994 in the remake of An Affair to Remember a.k.a. Love Affair. Knowing that they in are among the few couples anywhere who are totally committed to each other in real time and real life makes them very special. They guard their privacy and they should. I'll thank them here for their entire collection of entertaining work. I'd like to write the sequel to Love Affair and I'd love to see Annette do remakes of the Hepburn/Tracy comedies with Michael Douglas. Buy it and enjoy it.

It was somewhat historically accurate, although romanticized to the point that most younger viewers are impressed by this guy, rather than seeing him for what he actually was, A cold blooded homicidal maniac who stole anything he wanted, and killed anyone who got in his way. All of these mobsters, Luciano, Lansky, Costello, and of course, "Bugsy" Siegel were nothing but the epitome of the low life bottom feeders that they were. Siegel, though shown as some Romantic Cowboy, wasn't a gangster, but a mindless thug who killed on command. His girlfriend, Virginia Hill, also romanticized by Annette Benning, was nothing more than a thieving whore who worked as a showgirl when not selling her body. ... She got into the movies through a friendship with George Rath, after being "handed around" to the studio higher-ups. She was one of those women called "danger junkies", attracted to gangster or killer types. With Siegel, she found her perfect man; a sociopath with a greatly exaggerated self image, also attracted to her type of woman. He was stupid, and allowed her to manipulate him. She stole more than two million 1950's dollars and paid the ultimate price. She committed suicide, by being "thrown off a mountain". Quite simply put, Siegel outlived his usefulness and was murdered.

Old classic, very entertaining. Directors cut had scenes not seen before. Enjoyable and good quality.
