Halo Wars is a real-time strategy game set in the universe of Microsoft's blockbuster first-person shooter series. The game was created specifically for Xbox 360 by Ensemble Studios, the developer behind the acclaimed Age of Empires and Age of Mythology series. The focus of the game is on combat and conquest, with resource management taking a backseat to battlefield tactics. Units, vehicles, and the supplies needed to keep them running are produced at different buildings on base. In most missions, players order down the buildings they need on the planet's surface in pods sent from an orbiting command ship. The game's control scheme revolves around large, contextual, circular menus, designed with the Xbox gamepad in mind. The D-pad can be used to jump quickly between important spots on the map and the face buttons are used to select units and give common commands.<br><br>The main Halo Wars campaign plays through a series of scripted missions that follow a storyline set 20 years before the original Halo: Combat Evolved. Players control United Nations Space Command forces in a command ship called <i>Spirit of Fire</i>, on a mission over a distant planet called Harvest. The alien Covenant had taken Harvest from the UNSC and the UNSC has just taken it back, but Covenant activity continues in remote locations. When it is discovered that this activity centers on ancient Forerunner relics, hidden just beneath the surface and undiscovered during the humans' previous occupation, war on planet Harvest becomes a lot more interesting.<br><br>The looks and sounds of the vehicles and units were designed to match those of the original Halo games in detail, with zippy warthogs, wise-cracking infantry, and raspy, zealous aliens. A few units are introduced in this game, along with new hero characters, who fought the Covenant in the days before there was a Master Chief. In addition to the single-player campaign, a multiplayer mode is available for as many as six. In multiplayer games, players can choose to take command of the Covenant as well as the UNSC. The sides have different strengths, but each has unique powers that can turn the tide in a fight if used wisely. Capturing Forerunner relics on a map yields advantages, as well. During the development of the game, Microsoft announced that it would close Ensemble upon completion, making Halo Wars the swan song to the studio's successful, 14-year run.

    Ensemble studios did a great job of building a RTS

    Overall I give this game a solid 4 stars its no First person Shooter but to be able to play as the Covenant more than makes up for that. Its Not a pc RTS but on a console you don’t need all those bells and whistles to worry about. This game is very addictive with its in depth game features and prequel storyline that fills you in on a ton of halo history. Ensemble studios did a great job of building a RTS for a console. You have pre determined base locations and base slots that can be upgraded to allow for more building basically a cookie cutter base but on a console you don’t have the buttons to micro manage a huge base so this works out very well.     Just Right

    This in my opinion was not the greatest game ever, but it is one of my favorite. Why is it my favorite you ask? Well, the controls are great, the simplicity of the gameplay is extremely entertaining and the online multiplayer is highly addiciting (although not as addiciting as COD of Halo 3). It is not the perfect game considering that there are some graphical issues, the covenant seem a wee bit overpowered and that the single player campaign could've been longer. SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN You are... not the master chief. You a multitude of characters. a gruff sergeant, a sassy scientist, the ol veteran and A HELL LOAD OF OTHER UNITS.     Great game, lots of action, fun on online play!

    I bought this game on ebay for one great deal, I do not play games all the time, so a gaming chance is rare for me. When I did have time I would play Halo Wars to the best of my ability, and let me tell you it is one great game. I would rather play Command and conquer because halo wars does limit your building space, so it gets frustrating, but not only will it limit your building space, it will limit your enemies space as well. I would claim it to be a fair game, but other wise the campaign will not get you much fun, it was easy to beat, and easy to beat on the hardest difficulty. I would say it is easy on the xbox 360 to control, not as difficult as I though if it were to be compared to PC, so I would recommend this to someone who is wanting some action!

    A half-baked mediocrity that could have been good game

    The biggest disappointment about this game is its length. 15 years ago Blizzard came up with Warcraft. There were 2 campaigns - Humans and Orcs. 10 years ago - Starcraft, 3 campaigns. 5 years ago - Warcraft 3 with 4 campaigns. This year 2009 Microsoft released Halo Wars with whooping 1 (one) campaign of about a dozen missions! What's up with that?! You create unfinished, unpolished, tiny game, throw it at the wall and expect people to shell out $60 for it because it is related to legendary franchise?! I paid $25 at a company store, and still feel like I overpaid. Now to gory details Pros: + Awesome cinematics. + Great graphics.     An excellent RTS that harkens back to games like AoE!!!

    Let me begin by saying that Halo Wars is an excellent game. It appeals to many gamers for three reasons: it's an RTS, has controls that will work on the 360, and the Halo characters and universe. Another plus is the developer. Ensemble Studios, who developed excellent games such as Age of Empires/Mythology and other excellent RTS games know what they are doing with a game like this.
