I already own a working Nikon SB 800, so I knew what I was buying. It came on time and I can't say anything negative about the seller. However, it contained batteries, normally this is a bonus, but when I received it, they had unfortunately leaked, and it wouldn't work! A quick clean with vinegar on a few cotton buds and it removed the acid. After that and new batteries it worked.

Old reliable light unit
I have yet to be burned buying any gear off of ebay, however in these times any place you can save a few dollars is good. Doing digital event and wedding photography, SB-800's are the standard and while I have many lights available to choose from,this is the first choice. With the right diffuser they will mimic studio lighting and for the limited punch SB-800's have it suits digital photography just fine. It does have some limitations for every situation, but you can't beat its on camera portability and decent recycle time. Having to shoot alone with one light and moving around there is no way to do it lighter or faster. Not having to carry a heavy power pack or crazy flash bracket, even better. The unit I just got was missing a case and the extra battery holder. The book is ... What's not to like other than a learning curve?? The SB800 is incredibly versatile in so many ways. It picks up the camera's iso rating. It can be used on camera or off- either as the "master" or the "slave" and works in wireless or corded fashion. It is "self computing" in that it can tell you distance or aperture values for correct exposure. It works impressively with cameras featuring the Nikon CLS system, but works equally well with non CLS cameras with just a few tweaks. I already have an SB600, but quickly realized it's limitations in off camera use and the SB800 fills ALL my needs and then some- allowing me to now have either 2 off camera flashes ( with Camera as commander unit) or 1 slave with the SB800 as master flash on camera and the ... I mentioned a learning curve.. and it does take some reading and experimentation to learn as with anything "new", but the results are well worth any time and effort expended. Recycling time is fast and I have not experienced any problems with overheating (which seems to be the "bug" in the SB900's) . All in all, I highly recommend this flash unit to either experienced photogs or to amateurs wanting to venture into creative lighting.

Perfect for any photography level!
The SB-800 is a perfect choice of flash no matter what level of photography you are into. The 800 packs much more flash than the 600 for those darker rooms and you can get the SD-8A external battery pack to reduce recycle time for the flash far beyond anything many could imagine! We use these for fill flash outdoors and for our every day photography. In the studio, they are more than sufficient to set off studio strobes with light triggers with plenty of power left over. Wireless use of the flashes as remotes is easy and straight forward. No need to have a masters degree or be able to understand schmatics to operate the flash. Easy to understand cheet sheet is built right into the back of the flash card. The 800 works in fully automatic mode on the latest digitals like the D300, D90 ... The SB-800 is a perfect choice of flash no matter what level of photography you are into. NIKON SB800 is a great flash, BUT
This speedlight sold new for $320.00, I bought three. I wanted two more, have bought one. Nikon's new SB900 is overpriced. I will be switching to Quantum flashes over time. Unless you use more than one speedlight using CLS, and are being paid for your work, buy Sigma or any other generic flash. My SB80DX works fine for one flash on shoe mount uses. I will be buying a generic flash just to play with it. I bought this used SB800 because I am not buying a SB900 at almost 5500.00 when I can get Quantum's for a little more, and my Quantum Turbo Z's will not work with the Nikon SB900. Canon flashes are half the price of Nikon flashes. For $500.00 per flash Nikon should have changed back their CLS to be radio wireless for remote triggering up to 400 feet. Best flash for pro-sumer photographers
Great flash for your Nikon Digital camera, from the old, rugged, D70 right up to the D3s and D3X. With the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) that was created for the D70 and just about every D-series DSLR after it, you can get the lighting you need and more. I use a D90, and in Commander mode, I can use three different channels and up to 4 flashes per channel to achieve the lighting configuration I need for my portrait work. Put it on the camera in TTL mode, and I have nothing to worry about. The photo comes out exposed perfectly. Change from landscape to portrait shots and need to bounce the flash off the ceiling? No problem! This flash has two degrees of rotation (97 deg up and down, and 90 deg left and right {180 deg total} of movement. This flash is simply a joy to work with! I ...
