The Pentax X-5 camera detects if an image is in close range to the lens and automatically switches to macro mode. Terrific compact with great control
A small unit bigger than the "shirt pocket" types but it packs a big punch of a lens. Photos can be reviewed without technically turning the camera on. It has digital filter features and some other photographic tricks just for fun. PC connection is possible and AC power adapter is an inexpensive option. Good for primary photography and an excellent back-up camera for a SLR.

Peerage in cameras and preference only go to narrow ones perspective and enrich the manufacturers with followers. So just let the manufacturers do their best and I will pick and choose what I desire. The rest is up to them. The X-5 is a very nice camera especially when you can pick one up for far less than most higher end bridge cameras that add a few gadgets for sales appeal. A used X-5 used one in good condition will fetch less than some of the pocket cameras and it has a larger sensor than they carry. The sensor seems adequate for most tasks. It is a substantial and on the go camera built to withstand some abuse and really shines as a travel and event companion. I have felt the sting of lost cameras twice when abroad. Recently I photographed the Super Moon Eclipse and Blood Moon Extravaganza and it did a very fine job and nice detail work. With the fine telephoto lens, the large range of ISO settings and the adequate sensor I was able to capture the show even when our moon was in shade and the red blood color. I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking to take along a pal to enjoy and record their walk through what life has to offer.

For many, all you really need in one camera.
For many people the 24mm to more than 500mm (equiv) range covers all the lenses you will ever need. Your pro friends may laugh, but the pros laughed 40 years ago at ANY zoom lenses and now they all use them. I've gotten some great shots with this camera, even at the long end due to the image stabilization feature. Now, if you are planning on shooting action gym shots, you may need a true DSLR with better lenses than the "kit lens." Think $$$$$, as there ain't no free lunch when shooting low-light action. Sorry, mom. Manual exposure is limited, so if you want full manual with a variety of f/stops...this is not the camera for you. But for a good general purpose camera, it's smaller than the DSLR outfits and the image quality is quite good. LEARN to use exposure compensation and white ... I am pleasantly pleased with this camera that only cost $250.
I was tired of the poor lower light focusing of my NIKON CoolPix8700 8Xzoom (originally expensive) so decided I needed a new camera. I reviewed the PENTAX X-5 and liked it. At 16MP, it was double the resolution of my older camera at 8MP. I have not tried all the features of this camera but I am impressed with the performance for the low cost of $250. It focuses so much better than my older NIKON CoolPix8700 in lower light - except toward the zoom 26X limit. However, I have noticed that lower light non-flash pictures have a lot of yellow - haven't determined if I can make the flash always work in lower light conditions. I think I can partially correct for this in my photo processing computer program. A relative of mine just got a camera that had great lower light non-flash color but ... So far the best camera I've had.
I purchased this camera to try to upgrade another very good camera, one that didn't have a viewfinder. After having used this Pentax X-5 for a few weeks or so, I'm convinced it's the best camera I've had. I got such a good buy on this, a number of people would like to find the same buy. While I was really interested in getting a viewfinder, I didn't really know how very valuable a tilting LED screen was and out of over 200 pictures taken, I've used the viewfinder maybe twice. A lot of reviewers have complained that Ricoh/Pentax has discontinued this camera, they wish that company would reconsider. I'm very glad I chose this camera and wish it would be more available to other people. I did a "shoot off" with my other camera and sent the pics to a brother who is really into photography and ...
