Product Information

Based on the novel by Christophe Morley, KITTY FOYLE stars Ginger Rogers in an Academy Award-winning performance. Centered on the high society of Philadelphia's Main Line and those who wish to marry into it, the film addresses issues of class in America. Having grown up on the wrong side of the tracks, Kitty eventually becomes a successful executive in a New York fashion house. However, she still carries the torch for her former husband, Wyn, whose wealthy family couldn't accept her working-class background. Unwilling to forfeit his money and position for her, Wyn had the marriage is annulled. Several years later, in New York, Kitty must choose between two men--Wyn, who has reentered her life and wants to run away with her, and Mark, a doctor who wishes to marry her. Kitty follows her conscience and heart to make a decision that will alter her life.

Eh, Good but Not Great
Nice movie. The plot was a little loose, but that seems to happen many times in film adaptations of books. Of course, maybe the book wasn't that great either. The sexist message at the beginning of the film regarding women's "equal rights" was interesting, since most women consider they did not achieve that status (and still haven't completely) until 20+ years later. Ginger's portrayal of Kitty Foyle was good but not Oscar-worthy (her competition must have been easy prey), and I'm sure Katharine Hepburn (who turned down the part) would have given it the depth she did not. Ernest Cossart's portrayal of her "Pop" was outstanding. All other principal characters' performances were barely more than adequate. Poor Ginger - she just can't shake that Trilby image. :-D

Ginger Rogers wowwed the Academy Awards as Best Actress in 1940--the year after "Gone With The Wind"--in this performance as a dreamer Irish girl born on the wrong side of the tracks in Philadelphia during the 1920s. She has dreams of being "Main Line" Philadelphia material as indicated in the flashbacks showing her as a teenage girl straddling the line as the wealthy couples go to Assembly--evidently a sophisticated annual ball. But Kitty isn't really looking for Mr. Main Line when he appears as Wynnewood Strafford VI (Dennis Morgan) as he interviews her father, who was his childhood cricket coach. Wyn is charismatic, handsome, and interested. Furthermore, Wyn needs a typist at his magazine, and Kitty fits the bill. But as their employer-employee relationship fizzles out, their ... Meanwhile, Kitty has met a struggling medical doctor, Mark Eisen(James Craig), who lacks charisma, has a busy practice, and cannot afford to take Kitty out on a decent date (Can this be possible even in 1940?) Enter Wyn again on the night that would be Assembly night with a ball gown for Kitty and plans to have a mock Assembly in New York. He is re-charming Kitty so convincingly that he even proposes and elopes with her. The hink is his family, who is so snooty at their first meeting of Wyn's new wife that Kitty bolts out of their fancy living room. Their marriage is annulled. The movie continues with Kitty still in love with Wyn but dating Mark. Kitty is now working in New York for a department store perfume bar but is sent to Philadelphia to open the cosmetics counter of their new store there. Imagine her surpise when she learns she is waiting on the new Mrs. Wyn Strafford who is accompanied by their toddler son Wyn VII, very adorably played by Richard Nichols (the same adorable boy in "All This and Heaven Too"). The big question offered at the beginning of the movie is: Will Kitty run away to live in sin with her one true love who has abandoned his wife and son OR will she marry the struggling doctor who offers security but has only a small amount of charm. Overcoming all the odds by beating out Bette Davis (The Letter), Joan Fontaine (Rebecca), and Katherine Hepburn (The Philadelphia Story) for the Oscar, Ginger Rogers staked her claim as a dramatic actress with the additional ability to hoof it with Fred Astaire, who claimed that she was his favorite dance partner.

Kitty Foyle Movie
It was nice to be able to watch this movie anytime I want. Ginger Rogers gave a great performance and this is a movie one can watch over and over. The dvd came in pretty good shape and I was pleased overall.

Great film
This movie has everything. A small town girl falls for a rich man, loses him, then gets him back; but not before learning some very powerful lessons. Ginger Rogers is great in this role!

Great Movie
I remember watching this movie as a young girl in the 90's. I really enjoyed this of women who wouldn't settle for anything less. Great Movie and now I see why she won a Oscar for this role.
