  • Easy to use; a great reference text.

Lovely book. Easy to find artists names based on the hallmarks. The author includes a list of native artists at the end of the book, and lists them by tribe, but does NOT include a page reference where each artist be found. Seems like this would have been an easy addition. Suggest the following format: Artist name, artist tribe...page number. Maybe for the next edition.

  • Great reference guide. Must have for serious buyers.

I purchased this book on the advice of a dealer friend of mine, who specializes in southwestern jewelry and artifacts. I consider it an excellent resource for collectors and dealers alike and find the contents to be both useful and accurate. I find myself refering to it pretty consistantly. The information is laid out in a clear and concise way and is easy to find. It appears to cover most of the major Native American jewelry makers who signed their work. If the piece is not hallmarked, you need to go to a different resource. The only drawback (for those of us who like pretty pictures of jewelry) is that it contains no sample pictures of artist's work. I do however, recomend it very much for those who need a serious reference guide.

  • Best reference resource for old Native American jewelry

This is an excellent reference book for those buying, selling or collecting Southwest Indian jewelry. I buy and sell Native American jewelry and this book has been an invaluable resource in my business. It is particularly helpful when researching older Native American jewelry. It lists the artists name, tribal affiliation, and additional information about the artist, such as how long they have been producing jewelry, their relatives, the region from which they are from, etc. It's organized alphabetically, but the indexes are the truly valuable part, because you can look up an artist by the initials and/or symbols found on a piece of jewelry (i.e. animals, clouds, sun, plants, mountains, arrows, etc). It also identifies shop marks, and has sections for fetish carvers, pottery makers, and ...

  • Hallmarks of the Southwest by Barton Wright

I bought this book because I have several southwestern U.S. articles that either were not marked or the marks were unknown to me. I also have been in the right place at the right time, for acquiring southwest articles, and for my own edification (and for the edification of anyone who admired or wanted to buy them from me) it is nice to know who made (or whose style of work was similar) a particlar piece. Several internet sites recommended this book, so I thought I would get a coopy of it. I believe that somewhere in the title, the author should let the reader/researcher know that the book deals primarily with jewelry of the southwest. Although there are small sections on pottery, fetish carvers and heishi makers, and rugs and baskets, the bulk of the information is about silversmiths ...

  • Hallmarks of The Southwest - Absolutely Essential

This is an unmatched reference book for Southwestern Native American hallmarks and information on Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi silversmiths and their jewelry. I can't wait to search this book when I find a piece with an unfamiliar mark. Short bios on each artist, often with the year they first used their mark, help with identification. Often a hallmark will be a combination of initials indicating cooperation among several family members on individual pieces. Many of the old trading post and artist associations marks are also included. There are more recent books, and they are very good for more contemporary artists, but for the collector of vintage or antique pieces you don't want to be without this one.
