The film opens in a remote Japanese fishing village in 1929, where two sisters, Chiyo and Satsu, are sold by their troubled father to people who place Chiyo in a classy geisha house known as an okiya in Gion and Satsu in a much more vulgar and dangerous district. Chiyo becomes a maid to Hatsumomo, a cold, controlling, and calculating geisha who is instantly jealous of Chiyo's unusual, beautiful eyes and childish innocence. Chiyo is befriended by Pumpkin, another maid at the okiya, but the two are soon driven apart. Chiyo is shown compassion by the Chairman and another, more successful geisha, Mameha, who takes her under her wing as her "little sister," furthering the battle between Chiyo, now called Sayuri, and Hatsumomo. As Sayuri is trained in the art of being a geisha, learning how to walk, talk, dance, and serve (up to a point) in order to please and honor her distinguished male clients, World War II looms on the horizon, threatening to upend Japan and its old ways. MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA is a lush, sweeping historical and romantic epic, featuring gorgeous period costumes, primarily the exquisite kimono worn by the geisha. Ziyi Zhang (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) is outstanding as Sayuri, who stands up to the oppressive Hatsumomo (the effervescent Gong Li), while Michelle Yeoh, who starred with Zhang in CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, is splendid as the wise and elegant Mameha. Physical beauty with no heart
Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; 2046; Hero) is radiant as the young geisha Sayuri in Rob Marshall's beautifully filmed "Memoirs of a Geisha". Enchantingly beautiful and believably demure, she is perfectly cast in the starring role (with one small glitch being that she is actually not Japanese) . As a young girl sold into a geisha house and ultimately being demoted to servant, she spawns jealously from the other girls due to her beauty and strange rain-colored gray eyes. Hatsumomo (Gong Li) is at the height of her popularity as the shining star of the geisha house and works hard to keep the spotlight on herself, seeing Sayuri since her arrival as a possible threat that she tries from the onset to thwart. Through a series of events, Sayuri is transformed into a star geisha with ... However, World War II interrupts and the dream is shelved. While there are many elements of this lush and colorful saga that are appealing and are more than adequate, ultimately it ends on a flat note. The musical score complements the stunning period visual elements and has an adequately Japanense "flavor", but the movie lacks any real emotional punch and romantic feeling that surely would have elevated it from a good movie to a great one. Westernized material and ideals and having the actors speaking in English distill the flavor, leaving it emotionally muted. This is one of the best looking movies I've ever seen, with beautifully framed sets; lush, stunning costumes; and occasional scenes that transcend (including the breathtaking dance performance by Zhang during Sayuri's debut). However, the actors are limited by the English dialogue and are at times incomprehensible. The story sinks fast after the particularly stunning debut dance, and never resurrects itself. The movie never feels real, and is seen for what it is - a glossy Hollywood production that was far less than what I was hoping for. PROS - Stunning, lush sets and period costuming. CONS - Stilted, unnatural English dialogue; diminishing plot; emotionally faded.

Great Movie to Watch
This movie is beautifully done. I must admit I have never read the book, so I am not sure how well it has adapted, but just as a movie it is great. I believe it gives the audience a little bit of insight into what life as a geisha and becoming one was like despite its cinemography that probably dramatizes some things.

Unexpectedly good movie
I thought at first that it would be one of those hard to understand or get into but it wasn't like that at all and i loved the plot it had me drawn into the world of geishas and their cultural beliefs.
