Fresh from his success with HBO's ENTOURAGE, Jeremy Piven gives his career a further boost by taking the lead role in director Joe Carnahan's (NARC) fast-paced thriller, SMOKING ACES. Piven plays Buddy "Aces" Israel, a former Vegas performer who has holed up in the penthouse suite of a Lake Tahoe casino after what seems like half the planet decides they want him dead. The reason for this bloodlust stems from Israel's dalliances with the mob, who have put a $1 million price tag on his head after discovering he is about to tell all to the feds. The only people who don't want to put a premature end to Israel's life are two FBI agents, played by Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta, and their boss, Andy Garcia. As various assassins attempt to put an end to Israel's pitiful existence, a parade of celebrity cameos ensues, including Alicia Keys, Common, Ben Affleck, and Jason Bateman.Carnahan soaks the screen with vivid primary colors, lots of flashy set pieces, and plenty of guns and violence as his movie thunders from one explosive scene to the next. The shooting style, script, and acting are all highly indebted to Quentin Tarantino's early works, and the impressive ensemble cast will ensure plenty of PULP FICTION comparisons. Standout performances come courtesy of Piven and Liotta, with the former reveling in a character surrounded by burly bodyguards, cheap hookers, and a blizzard of cocaine as he sweats and paces around his penthouse hideout, ultimately awaiting either freedom or death as the movie nears its spectacular finale.

    "Way Past Words"

    `Smokin' Aces'is the next step in the evolution of madness and mayhem begun by the '94 cult classic `Pulp Fiction' and redefined in '03 with `Kill Bill.' Like the two previously mentioned films "Smokin' Aces' presents a display of outlandish, wacked out "bad guys" and hard nosed, amoral "good guys" that will keep you riveted to the screen. The action is fast and furious, the bloodshed plentiful and the plot turns will keep you wondering where this film is taking you until the very end.

    Best Picture of 2007, hands down!

    This movie is SERIOUSLY overlooked.... to those of you who have watched 'The Departed' you will understand the significance of my next comment. This movies ending packs more twists then 'The Departed'! Although many would say it IS the product of when Rat Race meets The Departed! Buddy 'Aces' Isreal is a man with huge connections into the mafia, his testimony in court could bring down mobsters from around the country, naturally they all want him whaced and when a $100, 000, 000 bounty is placed on his head, its hard to deny 9 digits! Every professional hitman (or woman) goaes after Buddy, but the Mob send for a specialist known only as 'The Swede' and the F.B.1 are trying to round him up for his proposed Testimony in court. Now, lets see if the world famous illusuionist Buddy 'Aces' ...

    A very below average movie

    Not horrible, but seems more like deleted scenes from a good Tarantino or Ritchie film. Characters get quickly introduced and then BAM - dead! Hard to care about the deaths of a character you just met, and that's the whole problem with this movie. I never cared about anybody in it. Ryan Reynolds is way out of his acting league and Ray Liotta seems a tad bored playing Narc, Jr. Some funny stuff (the wacky skinheads have a few moments, the lady hitmen have a few moments) and lots of completely over the top violence that still needs a semblance of realism to enjoy. But bullets are flying from every angle and I got lost as to who was trying to kill and why. The "twist" ending can be seen from miles away, so the climax has no juice either. Disappointing!

    “F.B.I.! F.B.I.!” Blam blam blam blam. “[Expletive]. [Expletive].” Blam blam blam. Spurt of blood. Plot twist. “F.B.I.! F.B.I.!” “[Expletive].” Blam blam blam blam blam. “[Expletive].” “F.B.I.!” “Hotel Security!” Blam. Exploding skull. Guy sits on a chain saw. Montage. [Expletive]. Plot twist. Roll credits. Yes, I condensed a bit, and I’m sorry if I spoiled anything, but the above is a fair summary of Joe Carnahan’s “Smokin’ Aces,” a Viagra suppository for compulsive action fetishists and a movie that strikes the chord of action. If you want guns ablazing, Give this one a try.

    A GREAT Mob Movie!! A+++ ACTION and A+++ Acting Cast!!!

    Did we like it?? It was EXCELLENT!! We watched it four times within 3 days!! Another GREAT MOVIE about Organized Crime, The Mob/Mafia, with A LOT of GREAT ACTION SCENES and EXCITEMENT!! It will keep your attention from beginning to end! No disappointments! Smokin Aces also offers a GREAT ACTING CAST and GREAT PERFORMANCES!! Alicia Keys looks GREAT in this film!! If you like Casino or Goodfellas, you'll love SMOKIN' ACES!! Rent It or Buy It? BUY IT!! Definitely! This movie does contain some brutally, graphic scenes, as most "good" Mob movies do.
