Please don't eat the tomatoes
I gave it a good rating because it's one of those "bad" science flicks that's still fun to watch. It starts out with two love empassioned teens necking in a car on a deserted road. Suddenly the girl looks up and screams as the camera gets closer to them. Soon two policemen find the wreck of the car but no sign of the teens. As one of the policemen goes to nearby town where the young owner of the car lives, you hear him radio back in a panic that the whole town is missing. Now we get to see a beautiful blonde, played by Peggy Castle, trying to get past an Army roadblock. Whould you believe it, she was even a Korean war correspondent who the Army officers remember with fondness. Of course, wearing her poodle skirt, iron bra, and not to mention, pearl necklace, she gets the Army to allow her ... On a hunch, she goes to a nearby state run agricultural experimental farm. Peter Graves is at his rock-jawed best as a scientist growing tomatoes and strawberries, which thanks to radiation, are growing at 10 times their normal size. He shows her what they're doing at the lab, must not have been any security passes needed, and mentions how they've had a hard time keeping several types of insects from munching on the super sized plants. Soon it's discovered that the last batch of insects, grasshopppers, have mutated and have grown as large, if not larger than a current day Hummer. Soon they threaten Chi Town while Peter Graves does his best to find a way of making the giant grasshoppers follow sound into Lake Michigan and thus killing themselves. Peggy has of course fallen in love with the big galloot and becomes a very pretty and docile assistant to his search for the right sound. There are several character actors who played Army officers here and in other films of the genre. They are Morris Ankrum and Thomas Browne Henry (who's nose is almost as big as Jimmie Durante's). You've seen Morris as a Brigader General in Earth vs the Flying Saucers (as the heroine's father) and Thomas as the Major General in 20 Million Miles to Earth. Being directed by Bert I Gordon, who has given us other epics like The Amazing Colossal Man, War of the Colossal Beast, The Magic Sword, and the Village of the Giants, has given this film the same type of......greatness?

A Memory Jostler...
What a great little film from the hey day of atomic sci-fi! Brought back lots of memories. As corny as it may be, BOTE will always have a place in my heart! Highly recommended!

1950's Sci-Fi classic
If you're like me and love the Sci-Fi films of the 1950's, you'll love this dvd. Peter Graves gives a steller performance as he battles giant grasshoppers. Good story, great acting and simple but effective special effects. This film was not available on dvd or vhs for years, don't pass this opportunity to get this classic feature. I highly recommend it.
