I only bought this because I need it for a class!
I only bought this book because I'm studying to be a dog trainer, and this book is on the list of required reading. My guess is it is used as an example of how NOT to train your dog. Once you know about how dogs learn, and learning theory- it is clear this book is useless in helping to train your dog. Maybe to create and anxious, fearful, reactive, stress, and potientially aggressive dog- but not a well trained one. If you are interested in different perspectives on dog training, it is interesting to see where the roots of 'jerk and pull' training are- and how deep they are. As a training book itself- don't bother.I only bought this book because I'm studying to be a dog trainer, and this book is on the list of required reading. Excellent source of knowledge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First used this book in 1985 at Arko Dog Training where I learned how to train my dog. Then I began teaching people how to train their dogs using this book. Never forgot it, the book I bought for some else to train their dog.

Excellent information, use common sense though.
This book was recommended by a friend who used the Koehler method to train police dogs. He swears by this method. I was very offended by some suggestions in the book but in reading the offensive information again I realized that the author doesn't suggest that ALL dogs be treated in the offensive mannor. It is to be used only as a last resort in most cases. I refused to try the preventative method for digging until I had exhausted all other methods except restricting my dog from the yard. Then I realized that it was more cruel to put my dog through all of the other trial and errors than to just do the water method in the first place and have the issue done in one day rather than three months. The water method worked although I didn't do 6 days as advised in the book. That's where ... This book was recommended by a friend who used the Koehler method to train police dogs. He doesn't dig any more and I'm not about to punish him for 6 days if he's not digging. After using the long line and now the leash for the past 2 weeks my dog heels perfectly, he sits when stopped, and I don't have to use treats. We're continuing with the program because it is working every time, all the time, not just when I have treats with me. If you are going to do the Koehler method, you'd better research it first, read the book twice through, and commit to the program. If you can't spank your kid for something major you'll never be able to do the Koehler method. It's a little bit heavy handed but then it works, just like spanking did for my stubborn boys. I am the only mother in my circle of friends who actually enjoys her teenage sons more as teens than toddlers or even 7-8 yr. olds. I want to enjoy my dog as much as I enjoy my boys. I highly recommend this book to all disciplined, reasonable, non-abusive type adults. This method is not abuse but it could be in the wrong hands.

The best book for dog training.
In my years of owning dogs of all breeds, my favorite is the German Shepherd,, this is the best book I ever owned to train my dogs. I first got this book in 1970 something, I bought this for a friend as she enters into the world of dog ownership.
