The Long Island Expressway, the highway that traverses suburban Long Island with its "lanes moving east, lanes moving west, and lanes that go straight to hell" serves as the central metaphor in this disturbing meditation on coming of age and teenage vulnerability. Howie Blitzer (Paul Franklin Dano) is a sensitive fifteen-year-old who runs with a rough crowd. The recent death of his mother (in a car accident on exit 52 of the L.I.E.) and his father's indifference to it, have left him floating in a world bubbling over with sex, violence, and danger. When his best friend Gary convinces Howie to burglarize the house of their neighbor, 60-year-old Big John (Brian Cox), the tenuous balance of their teenage existence is entirely thrown off. To make matters even worse, Howie's father is arrested over a bad business deal. Howie is left dangling, and only Big John seems to care. A harrowing mixture of tenderness and perversion electrifies the father-son relationship that forms between Howie and Big John. Director Michael Cuesta's touching vision of domestic life in modern-day suburbia is at once humorous and unnerving as it boldly charts one boy's convoluded path through adolescence.

Makes you see inside a sick man's heart
This film shows a surreal look at a man's sick underage desires for underage boys. While it also shows that people with this sort of sickness don't generally feel good about having such a sickness and they god forbid they even have good intentions when they aren't taken over by their sickness... I like that the main character is a fairly innocent boy and while the sick man has some sexual interest in him, he doesn't proceed with them once he gets to know the child. Showing that there is even good in these so called monsters of society... It's a sickness and should be treated as such, but if for some reason they can't itch their desires and they did in fact proceed upon their sickness, of course they should be punished.This film shows a surreal look at a man's sick underage desires for underage boys. The movie needed have a better ending to it
Too many swear words the story was good but too many swear words I felt sorry for the boy and his relationship with that old man and his relationship with his father that's in prison the story ended Too Short it didn't have a very good ending to it

An 15 year old boy Howie crushed over another 15 year old boy Gary who is into breaking and entering. Gary starts wanting to move out of town and asked howie to come along. good times that lead to The breaking into a house that is owned by a sex offender named Big John and gary knows this. Days after Howie Finds out why have Gary been sleeping around Including with Big John after Big john Hunts him down like a greyhound. Big John and Howie develop a awkward relationship which is not known if it's sexual. In time Gary Splits town after robing howie's dad blind and does not take Howie along. Howie's dad Gets Arrested and big john has a fatherly experience with howie. then Tragedy hits big john for egnoring his ex lover that is jelous of him and howie. Take the ride !
This movie disturbed me because it showed a pedifile being likable, even though he has a karmic ending. The story was very well done about a young boys coming of age & the feelings that arise , friendships that aren't so true ,not knowing who your friends are & the trouble you can get into through all this.It takes you with him on his ride to discovering how important it is in picking a road in life & were it can lead.This movie disturbed me because it showed a pedifile being likable, even though he has a karmic ending. The story was very well done about a young boys coming of age & the feelings that arise , friendships that aren't so true ,not knowing who your friends are & the trouble you can get into through all this.It takes you with him on his ride to discovering how important it is in picking a road in life & were it can lead.
