Product Information

The Newbery Award-winning author of Up a Road Slowly presents the unforgettable story of Jethro Creighton--a brave boy who comes of age during the turbulent years of the Civil War. In 1861, America is on the cusp of war, and young Jethro Creighton is just nine-years-old. His brother, Tom, and his cousin, Eb, are both of fighting age. As Jethro's family is pulled into the conflict between the North and the South, loyalties are divided, dreams are threatened, and their bonds are put to the test in this heart-wrenching, coming of age story. "Drawing from family records and from stories told by her grandfather, the author has, in an uncommonly fine narrative, created living characters and vividly reconstructed a crucial period of history."-- Booklist

  • Walk in one family's shoes

It seems that readers are bipolar about this book, either loving it or hating it. Mature readers who have patience for the colloquial southern "talk" and the pacing of the narrative get more from this story than kids in junior high. It's a perspective on the Civil War that is unusual and personalized through one family's experience.

  • A triple-read book.

Based on a real life and thoughtfully written; about the Civil War, but also about human nature. Jethro is you own brother, one you cry over. The suspense is real- not overdone, but just the way you felt when you were little and needed to walk through the woods after dark- terrified and fearing the worst. At the end you feel with the characters- why? Why the death, the pain, the hatred? But also the hope- life will go on, and good things can still happen.

  • A simple yet compelling story of families divided...in a localized setting

This really is a great book for the classrooms of the Southeast Missouri/Southern Illinois regions...the kids often love the dialect (difficult to read at first because of the spellin's) but soon enjoy the story of the people who lived during this time in our history. Readers learn of those who had struggles with the differing of ideas and viewpoints of which have now helped to create this country in which we live. The book opens the avenues of historical fiction for all to enjoy.

  • Civil war book

Very good book to relate to the civil war if you are interested in the civil war read this book.

Fabulous book with a whole new take on America's most unnecessary and destructive war. Super easy to read, yet compelling.
