À propos de ce produit

Product Information

Throughout his career, Chris Bohjalian has earned a reputation for writing novels that examine some of the most important issues of our time. With Midwives , he explored the literal and metaphoric place of birth in our culture. In The Buffalo Soldier , he introduced us to one of contemporary literature's most beloved foster children. And in Before You Know Kindness , he plumbed animal rights, gun control, and what it means to be a parent. Chris Bohjalian's riveting fiction keeps us awake deep into the night. As The New York Times has said, "Few writers can manipulate a plot with Bohjalian's grace and power." Now he is back with an ambitious new novel that travels between Jay Gatsby's Long Island and rural New England, between the Roaring Twenties and the twenty-first century. When college sophomore Laurel Estabrook is attacked while riding her bicycle through Vermont's back roads, her life is forever changed. Formerly outgoing, Laurel withdraws into her photography and begins to work at a homeless shelter. There she meets Bobbie Crocker, a man with a history of mental illness and a box of photographs that he won't let anyone see. When Bobbie dies suddenly, Laurel discovers that he was telling the truth: before he was homeless, Bobbie Crocker was a successful photographer who had indeed worked with such legends as Chuck Berry, Robert Frost, and Eartha Kitt. As Laurel's fascination with Bobbie's former life begins to merge into obsession, she becomes convinced that some of his photographs reveal a deeply hidden, dark family secret. Her search for the truth will lead her further from her old life--and into a cat-and-mouse game with pursuers who claim they want to save her. In this spellbinding literary thriller, rich with complex and compelling characters--including Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan--Chris Bohjalian takes readers on his most intriguing, most haunting, and most unforgettable journey yet.

Package of 2 glass pitchers arrived perfectly today. The husband & wife team Zabrina & John packed these pitchers so securely that it would have taken a truck to run over the package to damage the glass pitchers! Add to the fact that they also included 2 very kind thank you notes, and what you have here is a as good as it get eBay seller. Do not hesitate to do business with Zabrina & John at SecondMoonshot, you'll be glad you did!

  • Recommended book: The Double Bind

I bought this book as it was selected by my book club to read. The reason we chose it is because we have read other books by Chris Bohjalian and enjoy his writing. I liked the book very much because it dealt with several interesting topics. It showed the value and worth of human beings and how homeless people should not be faceless as well. They also have a story and may have contributed value to society prior to whatever circumstance brought them to life on the streets: chronic poor choices in some cases but very often psychiatric problems, or both. It was also an interesting study of post traumatic stress syndrome and how it impacted a person and the lives of those around them. It has a surprising twist at the end that I will not spoil for those who want to read the book. Well ...

  • A great story with a great twist at the end.

It has been a long time since I read this book, but I can tell you that I really loved the story. The twist at the end took me totally by surprise and I swear that you will not see it coming. Make sure you read the author's notes at the front of the book and the circumstances that inspired Chris Bohjalian to write this novel. He was invited to a homeless shelter to observe the contents of a bag owned by Bob "Soupy" Campbell. Bobby Crocker is the fictitious homeless character in the novel, but all the photographs used in the book were Bob "Soupy" Campbell's photos. He was a professional photographer in the 1950's and 1960"s. Great Photos. Check out the photo of Chuck Berry on page 14 and you'll see what I mean. I suggest that you should not miss the opportunity to read this book. It teaches ...

  • Doesn't make sense

The Double Bind reads as a mystery with some very confusing elements such as the use of characters from another well known novel. The reader begins to accept these characters, since there is no indication that they are any more or less "real" than the characters framing the action. As the mystery resolves, however, we begin wondering why we care at all, since the characters and situation are not sympathetically drawn, or even well defined. The final twist makes everything that happened in the story suspect. This story could have been accomplished more effectively by other techniques such as alternating voices by chapter, or giving more indications that the "writer" was mentally unbalanced. As it is, the psychotic diagnoses attributed to the writer are not plausible given the relatively ...

  • Group discussion read

I haven't finished this book yet. It is for my discussion group next month. So far it has kept my interest and is easy to read. I love the Gatsby theme going through the book.

  • Chat with the author

Interesting mystery. I bought it for a book discussion group that I belong to. The author has agreed to a conference call when we meet for the discussion. We are all excited about speaking with him.
