Product Information

Now a major motion picture! From beloved international sensation and #1 New York Times bestselling author Tatiana de Rosnay come's her celebrated novel Sarah's Key. Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vel' d'Hiv' roundup, but not before she locks her younger brother in a cupboard in the family's apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours. Paris, May 2002: On Vel' d'Hiv's 60th anniversary, journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France's past. Through her contemporary investigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that connect her to Sarah. Julia finds herself compelled to retrace the girl's ordeal, from that terrible term in the Vel d'Hiv', to the camps, and beyond. As she probes into Sarah's past, she begins to question her own place in France, and to reevaluate her marriage and her life. Tatiana de Rosnay offers us a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this painful episode.

Reviews
Sarah's Key is the most compelling, gripping novel I've read in a long time. Loved everything about it., "SARAH'S KEY unlocks the star crossed, heart thumping story of an American journalist in Paris and the 60-year-old secret that could destroy her marriage. This book will stay on your mind long after it's back on the shelf." -Risa Miller, author of Welcome to Heavenly Heights, "A wonderful book." --Joy Behar, The View "This is the shocking, profoundly moving and morally challenging story... It will haunt you, it will help to complete you... nothing short of miraculous." -Augusten Burroughs "Just when you thought you might have read about every horror of the Holocaust, a book will come along and shine a fierce light upon yet another haunting wrong. SARAH'S KEY is such a novel. In remarkably unsparing, unsentimental prose... through a lens so personal and intimate, it will make you cry--and remember." -Jenna Blum, author of Those Who Save Us "A haunting, riveting novel... This book grabs your heart in the opening chapter, and its scenes and characters stay with you long after you finish." --Publishers Weekly, a PW 2008 Staff Pick "Masterly and compelling, it is not something that readers will quickly forget. Tatiana de Rosnay has captured the insane world of the Holocaust and the efforts of the few good people who stood up against it in this work of fiction more effectively than has been done in many scholarly studies. • A non-Holocaust book and movie about the Holocaust

My wife and I watched the movie and it was truly outstanding. Totally engrossing. I immediately ordered the book for her because I knew it would be every bit as good. According to my wife, the book differs from the movie but is every bit as good. The movie is billed as an adaptation, so no problems there. What I really like about the movie and what my wife told me about the book, is that the movie has the holocaust in France as a back story, but the real story is about Sarah and the people in her life. The character development is superb. I don't want to give away too much of the story, but at the very beginning you will learn that Sarah's family lives in a section of Paris that is primarily Jewish. After the occupation of Paris, the Nazis step in and start deporting the Jews. ...

  • engaging, inspiring, enlightening!

To write about the Holocaust from a child's perspective takes a special talent, but to entwine it with a very adult story is just phenomenal. And an added attraction is how much one learns about life in today's Paris as well be as France of the be 40s.

  • A must-read -- for EVERYONE

This should be required reading for every man woman and child on the planet. Genocide is evil and ruins so many people's lives -- and those are the survivors, to say nothing of the victims. Very well done story, absolutely riveting. Heartbreaking, and yet uplifting believe it or not. It will change you forever. Can't say enough about it. Books about the holocaust are a hard recommendation. But if it's ever a topic you discuss among friends/colleagues/family, this is the perfect book to include in the conversation.

  • Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay

A powerful story of the arrest and deportation of the Jews from France to German concentration camps in July 1942 by the French police. The story centers on 10 year old Sarah. Knowing something was wrong but not understanding it fully, when the French police arrive at her door, she hides her younger brother in a cabinet, locks it and puts the key in her pocket. Sarah has no comprehension that she will not return home in a short peroid of time. Her only thought is to keep her brother safe from the police and to come back and get him later. Of course, this never happens and Sarah is left with the truths of that night and the need to know what happened to her brother. It is her story during the war and, 60 years later, the story of a young American journalist who unravels Sarah's story. ...
