Director John Badham's passionate thriller stars Jason Patric as Henry Donovan, a talented and cynical New York painter who is caught between the high ideals of his artist father (Rod Steiger) and his passion for art forgery. This is a movie that I just happened to find at a flea market. I had never even heard of it, but it is one of my personal favorites. Harry Donovan is a master of deception. He can paint a Renoir, or a Cezan, or Piccaso, but he just can't seem to paint a Harry Donovan. With all the talent in the world, he has always been a forger. He is smart though, he only paints the second and third tier masters. He flies under the radar. He is offered $500,000 to paint a Rembrant by three art dealers. He goes to Holland and does just that. In a strange turn of events, one of the art dealers kills one of his partners and tries to double cross Harry and frame for the murder. Harry grabs the painting and goes on the run with a renown art expert and authenticator. He never signed the painting so he hadn't ... This is a movie that I just happened to find at a flea market. He never signed the painting so he hadn't forged anything, but a group of major art critics and experts had judged it authentic, hence worth millions! Now he is charged with stealing a Rembrant and murder. Before he is caught, he sent a letter to the old man in Southern Spain where a painting was purchased earlier for around $40. That painting was worthless, but it was used to establish a prominence for the Rembrant. When caught, Harry told the officials that he had painted the Rembrant. Of course they didn't believe him. He set about to reproduce the painting inside the court before the jury and all others, but decides not to. One of the other partners in the fraud is convinced that if Harry is convicted, that his partner will turn on him next and get rid of him too. He clears Harry, the partner goes to jail for murder. The painting is sold for about $50M in auction. The remaining crooked art dealer thinks he has really pulled a big one, but the prominence reverted to the old man in Spain and he got the money. The painting wound up in the Prado. This was a good movie with an intelligent plot.

Great Entertainment
Jason Patric and Irene Jacob give stellar performances in a well-written drama set in the world of art. Although the film was a sleeper when it first came out, it has become a classic. I highly recommend it.

INCOGNITO casts a spell of tickling excitement as Henry (Jason Patric) enacts a deception to get rich quick. Under the direction of John Badham (also famous for WARGAMES; and DROP ZONE) Henry's plot slams into the perceptive eyes of Marieke (Irene Jacob), an alert Painting Expert. Henry caught in this lie of forging a painting is challenged by Marieke to become a legtimate painter. The death of his father forces Henry to finally see himself in the mirror of truth about his deceptive means of earning a living. A wonderful twist of legalities (The English Court attempting to convict Henry while a Spanish Law convicts the remaing Art Dealer who sponsored the forged Rembrandt) provides Henry a second chance to be a recognized artist and to experience real love. Jo JoINCOGNITO casts a spell of tickling excitement as Henry (Jason Patric) enacts a deception to get rich quick. Es una película bien lograda con una trama interesante y un desenlace inesperado. No se porque la película no se encuentra en los medios tradicionales usados hoy día. En fin, vale la pena.

After being framed for murder by the dealers, Harry is forced to go on the run across Europe with a French Art expert (Irene Jacob) who becomes his love.
