PROS -Surprisingly sharp throughout focal and aperture range (corner-to-corner, wide open) -Constant aperture (f/4) -16mm wide end -Useful partial macro (not full 1:1) -Large focus ring throw (easier to manual focus) -Quick-shift: easy to engage manual focusing by moving the focus ring -Inexpensive, excellent value CONS -Short focal range (45mm at its longest) -Not the fastest aperture (f/4) -Slight distortion on the wide end -Chromatic aberrations can be strong in some situations -Plastic build is fairly sturdy, but a little loose Regardless of the fact that it's very affordable, it's a remarkably sharp and contrasty lens. There's barely a difference stopping down from f/4 to f/5.6; it is often the case that a lens gets noticeably sharper in the borders and corners after stopping down a ... I feel comfortable shooting at f/4, and it even beats some lenses several times its cost. Of course, you don't get much of a zoom range and 45mm feels a little limiting, although its 16mm wide end is quite nice. CA can be too strong sometimes, but it's easy to correct in a digital workflow. Even then, this lens is such excellent value that I have trouble deciding on a good replacement it. Other observations: Bokeh is okay, not the best but still decent. The lens is peculiar in that the lens barrel moves forward as you zoom out, and retracts as you zoom in. This has come as an advantage in candid situations when people think that I am shotting past their shoulder when I am actually including them in the shot.

Pentax SMCP-DA 16-45mm f/4.0 ED AL Lens
I purchased this lens to complement my Pentax K10D. I needed a good wide angle lens; I had full frame lenses already, which on a DSLR translate into normal and telephoto(ie. my Sigma 28-105). I considered the kit Pentax 18-55 and even tried to buy one online. The deal fell thru, however and I was back to square one. Ths lens is a excellent upgrade to the kit lens and offers a wider angle on top of that. It also has a constant F/4 aperture which is a big plus when it comes to low light shoooting. The telephoto end of the lens is a little short(45mm, which is equivalant to about 67mm in 35mm terms). Other than that, picture quality is excellent. I highyly reccomend this lens to anyone owning a Pentax DSLR. Prices are resonable if you look dilligently(like I did).I purchased this lens to complement my Pentax K10D. Great find
Only a week or so, but this may be my new favorite lens. This copy is very sharp. Love the short minimum focusing distance.

Great Wide Angle Lens
The lens is well built and covers the wide range to the telephoto which makes it somewhat better than the kit lens. Pentax builds nice lenses to outfit your Pentax digital camera. And even though this is a older lens, if you pick up a clean one, they work nicely for a reduce price over new.

Pentax SMCP-DA 16-45mm f/4.0 ED AL Lens
I really like this lens. It's not too heavy although it is a tad on the large side with a barrel diameter of 67mm and a max length, at the wide end, of over 5", about 130mm. (This makes using a built-in flash problematic, even without the lens hood.) But, my copy seems well built; and as others have noted, it's sharp thoughout its range, even at f/4, with nice color, contrast ... And no frustrating "zoom creep." It's now the permanent walk-around on my K10D. I'd certainly recommend it.I really like this lens.
