Product Information

John Ford cast former matinee idol Tyrone Power against type in the true story of Marty Maher, a humble Irish immigrant who rose through the ranks to become one of West Point's most revered instructors. Arriving at the hallowed military academy near the turn of the 20th century, Maher first gets a job as a cafeteria dishwasher but realizes that the enlisted men receive better treatment and quickly becomes one. The life of military discipline is no easier for the Irishman, and he soon finds himself in the guardhouse after getting in a fight with an officer he mistakenly accuses of a crime. Upon his release, Capt. Herman Koehler (Ward Bond), who saw the fight and admired his pugilistic skill, offers Marty a job as the school's boxing coach. Koehler also introduces him to the quiet Irish-born cook, Mary (Maureen O'Hara), who will become his wife. As the years pass, Marty's role expands beyond his place in the athletic department as he gradually becomes one of the most beloved characters in the school's history, a second father to thousands of grateful cadets. This warmly sentimental, typically Fordian tribute to a life of service--the director's first film following a year off because of eye surgery--features a fine performance by Power as the volatile, big hearted Hibernian.

    A Great John Ford Movie

    If you like Director John Ford movies, you will love this one. Filmed in 1955, The Long Gray Line tells the Hollywood version of a true story - the life of an Irish Immigrant, Martin Maher. Marty Maher was an Irish immigrant who came to work at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) in the late 1890's. He spent a short time as a waiter, and then enlisted in the Army, being sworn in by then-Captain John Pershing. Marty spent his entire Army career at West Point, retired as a Master Sergeant in 1928, and was hired back as a Civil Service employee, ultimately spending fifty-five years there. The movie takes some liberties, but doesn't exagerrate the close fatherly relationship he established through the years with many of the men that went on to lead the Army through both world wars.     Good film but poor dvd

    Perhaps THE LONG GRAY LINE isn't one of the most famous film of Mr. Ford. But it so lovely that it doesn't matter. The performance of Tyrone Power is wonderful but it's most important, in my opinion, the presence of Maureen O'Hara, very pretty, beautiful. You can't forget her. But the pity of it is that dvd edition is very poor. No extras, no documentaries, no information about the main character of the film: Marty Maher. Only one good thing: this dvd edition has been remasterized and you can choose between the full screen version or the widescreen.

    5 star movie

    This is such a beautiful movie from start to end. Tyrone Powers plays such an engaging part. He is the fighting Irishman and becomes loved by all at West Point as an instructor and rises to rank of Corporal. Maureen O'Hara plays an incredible part as his match. Their love and dedication to West Point Academy shows such an emotional and important part of their lives throughout this movie. Movie for all ages to enjoy.

    The Long Gray Line 5/5

    This movie brought me back to my childhood when my parents took the whole family to downtown Detroit to see it. It has always had special meaning to my family. When it came out on VHS, I bought a copy for all my siblings. I just discovered recently that it was available on DVD and had to have my own copy. I was able to watch it, but the next day, my puppy ate the disc. I guess I'll just have to get a new copy. It was a very emotional movie and Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara were at their best. It provided laughter and tears while presenting a story based on a real person, Marty Maher, an immigrant from Ireland who made his life at West Point. It also presented a bit of history with its "Class the Stars Shined On" with the mention of Eisenhower, and other famous soldiers. Highly ...
