Product Information

The year is 1738; the place, Paris. A baby is born under a fish-monger's bloody table in a marketplace, and abandoned. Orphaned, passed over to the monks as a charity case, already there is something in the aura of the tiny infant that is unsettling. No one will look after him; he is somehow too demanding, and, even more disturbing, something is missing: as his wet nurse tries to explain, he doesn't "smell" the way a baby should smell; indeed, he has no scent at all. Slowly, as we watch Jean-Baptiste Grenouille cling stubbornly to life, we begin to realize that a monster is growing before our eyes. With mounting unease, yet hypnotized, we see him explore his powers and their effect on the world around him. For this dark and sinister boy who has no smell himself possesses an absolute sense of smell, and with it he can read the world to discover the hidden truths that elude ordinary men. He can smell the very composition of objects, and their history, and where they have been, he has no need of the light, and darkness is not dark to him, because nothing can mask the odors of the universe. As he leaves childhood behind and comes to understand his terrible uniqueness, his obsession becomes the quest to identify, and then to isolate, the most perfect scent of all, the scent of life itself. At first, he hones his powers, learning the ancient arts of perfume-making until the exquisite fragrances he creates are the rage of Paris, and indeed Europe. Then, secure in his mastery of these means to an end, he withdraws into a strange and agonized solitude, waiting, dreaming, until the morning when he wakes, ready to embark on his monstrous quest: to find and extract fromthe most perfect living creatures-- the most beautiful young virgins in the land-- that ultimate perfume which alone can make him, too, fully human. As his trail leads him, at an ever-quickening pace, from his savage exile to the heart of the country and then back to Paris, we are caught up in a rising storm of terror and mortal sensual conquest until the frenzy of his final triumph explodes in all its horrifying consequences. Told with dazzling narrative brilliance and the haunting power of a grown-up fairy tale, "Perfume" is one of the most remarkable novels of the last fifty years.

  • A real stinker! Just kidding

A captivating book to say the very least. Though admittedly I thought the concept far fetched prior to reading the book for myself, Suskind sells it, and it is a tale you won't soon forget. You will almost leave your library smelling of many of the smells the author descibes so vividly, and leave you almost longing to smell those you couldn't quite imagine...almost. A brilliant description of character and motive leaves almost no empathy for protagonist Grenouille, a unique reading experience for me. His motive simply isn't one a reasonably healthy human can relate to. A fast paced array of flawed and stinking characters will leave you unsettled and perhaps just slightly concerned about how people may be percieving your own body odor. NDH band Rammestein as well as Nirvana both found ...

  • Truly A Disturbing Read

I've read THOUSANDS of books- and I mean, ANY KIND OF BOOK YOU CAN THINK OF. This one just does something to you. The author makes you see things- or smell them- in a completely different way. Honestly. He pulls things out from way deep in your....whatever...and puts it on paper, and suddenly, you find yourself really understanding and BELIEVING things that are utterly insane. He's that vivid. This is one of those books that you read and then say "what kind of person could come up with that?" You'll be disgusted by reading it- but you'll keep reading anyway. Totally mesmerizing. The author is a genius. However, the ending of this book leaves much to be desired for. Suskind is extremely descriptive of each and every detail throughout the book- down to the most miniscule things you ...

  • Twisted scented creation

I first read this book many years ago, in Portuguese. I have the (rather good?!) habit of re reading the books I truly consider impressive. This is a true comtemporary classic, worth the trip to the seventeen hundreds Paris. It tells about a journeyman, a perfumist apprentice which has strange ideas; he goes out and about, traveling between twisted wit, knowledge and insanity. Translator by passion and by no means a journalist, I am not really good at writing reviews - and this is a rather romantic book, but filled with very interesting information. Give it a try, odds are you might like it pretty well. Greetings to my fellow literature lovers, B. C.
