Reviews
"W. P. Kinsella plays with both myth and fantasy in his lyrical novel, which was adapted into the enormously popular movie, 'Field of Dreams.' It begins with the magic of a godlike voice in a cornfield, and ends with the magic of a son playing catch with the ghost of his father. In Kinsella's hands, it's all about as simple, and complex, as the object of baseball itself: coming home. Like Ring Lardner and Bernard Malamud before him, Kinsella spins baseball as backdrop and metaphor, and, like his predecessors, uses the game to tell us a little something more about who we are and what we need." Synopsis
The inspiration for the beloved film Field of Dreams, Shoeless Joe by W. P. Kinsella is the story about the beauty and history of baseball, and the power and endurance of a dream. "A moonlit novel about baseball, dreams, family, the land, and literature."--Sports Illustrated "If you build it, he will come." These mysterious words, spoken by an Iowa baseball announcer, inspire Ray Kinsella to carve a baseball diamond in his cornfield in honor of his hero, the baseball legend Shoeless Joe Jackson. What follows is both a rich, nostalgic look at one of our most cherished national pastimes and a remarkable story about fathers and sons, love and family, and the inimitable joy of finding your way home., More than the inspiration for the beloved film Field of Dreams , Shoeless Joe is a mythical novel about "dreams, magic, life, and what is quintessentially American" ( Philadelphia Inquirer ). • Just as enjoyable as the movie!

After watching the movie numerous times and wanting more the original story filled the bill. More nuances greater detail and a different style of writing kept my interest throughout the book. Reading other articles about the author and what I got from them was that W.P. Kinsella was accommodated the movie director all the time and to me between the author and the movie director a somewhat different, but equally entertaining story was told by the movie verses the novel. I'm not an avid reader and I can't put into words the writers style, but I liked it and would reccommend it to anyone having seen the movie or not.

  • Inspired movie 'Field of Dreams'

Great book that inspired movie "Field of Dreams" which is a selection for my library program called Book & Movie Night at the Library. The idea is that most great movies were inspired by great or interesting books. I'm in Iowa so this story has more meaning for us because that "Field of Dreams" is in Iowa...

  • "Shoeless Joe" is a magical trip

Having seen the movie "Field of Dreams" multiple times, I was eager to read the novel upon which it was based. And it is truly magical. I only wish that W. P. Kinsella were still alive so I could thank him personally.

Great book, fun to read and so descriptive! The words are like paintings, it just paints a picture in your mind as to what is going on. Highly recommend.
