Forbidden Planet: Best Sci Fi Movie Ever!
You may think Star Wars qualifies as the best SciFi movie ever - but watch this movie to see where George Lucas claims to have gotten a lot of his inspiration. Lucas even pays tribute to Robby The Robot in the first Star Wars movie (Look in the background of the jawa landcrawler). This movie has so much pop culture and well done special effects - that it will absolutely AMAZE you. Very cool to see Leslie Neilson as a young actor - it will be hard for you to accept him a serious role after seeing him in the Naked Gun and Airplane movies. I think we will find that the TV series "Lost" is based loosely on this movie and Shakespeare's The Tempest. Even though this movie was made in the mid 50's - I doubt seriously that you ... I first watched Forbidden Planet over 40 years ago, and except for Star Wars most other sci-fi movies produced before Star Wars and many since, have not met the standard set by Forbiden Planet. Charracteristic of nearly all movies produced by Hollywood in the 50's , 60's , and even the 70's , the acting was somewhat predictable and dated, the special effects rivaled and even surpassed the mid-grade computer-generated ones of today, and instead of the lone female getting all kinds of lewd and pornographic sex acts performed on her as in today's seemingly mandatory cinema obligations Forbidden Planet fortunately has merely overacted kissing portrayed. The rugrats at home won't be prompted to field-test recreational sex acts on the neighbor's kids after watching Forbidden Planet, not so with ... Great story, great acting, great special effects. A must have movie.
This a great classic sci fi movie from the 1950s. Gene Rodenberry borrowed a lot from this movie when he made Star Trek a decade or so later. This was the first movie to show a human faster than light ship. The synopsis is a spacehip from Earth is sent to check on a human colony on a alien planet after 20 years of no contact. When they arrive, they find only two survivors, Dr. Morbius, played by Walter Pidgeon and his daughter played by Anne Francis, have survived. Dr. Morbius warns the Earth ship away, but the Captain Adams, played by Leslie Nielsen,decides to land and investigate. Eventually, he discovers the deadly secret of Altair IV. The story is very tight and the plot doesn't have any major holes in it making for a really good movie. There is just the right blend of mystery, ... This a great classic sci fi movie from the 1950s. This was also the movie that introduced Robby the Robot. The special effects that still hold up, not as glitzy as modern CGI, but they do a great job in bringing the story to life. They were nominated for an academy award for 1956. This was an MGM production, and they spent the money to do it right. The movie simply looks great and all aspects of the production, cinematics, make-up, sound, etc are done by professionals and it shows. If there is anything to complain about, it would be the electronic soundtrack, which, I must reluctantly admit, gets annoying when it hits the high notes in some places, but doesn't ruin the movie at all.

Ahh... when I was a boy, I didn't sleep soundly for days after watching this one. Now, 40 years later, it's still good, and waaaaaay ahead of its time. My (much younger) wife watched it with me and said it was cheesy, but she didn't see it for its story line or its first-ever landmark movie making. Consider the task the makers wanted to undertake, the tools they had, the risk (money spent) in making it, the actors carrying an intellectual plot, making it believable, and you see professionals performing--in frontof, and behind the screen--at their finest. Film students and live art fans should have this just to see what can be done. I still think it's one of the best efforts ever done, considering the period it was done in. Great entertainment for the money! Mind blowing hints of the future!
This is a great movie for its time, but its reference to space-age technology is most impressive. Due to its brave and unique message,star performances, plot, and overall value it deserves the 5 stars I gave it. It is certainly entertaining. It depicts conveniences that would be considered impossible to many yet will emerge in our new age. If you are looking for clues that some people knew of the technology of the future get this movie! The romantic parts are very nice. Anne Francis is beautiful and the male stars are handsome! You will certainly recognize some of the actors. Whatever you do, pay attention to all references to technology... The possibilities are mind blowing! This movie will bring to mind Sci-Fi works that followed (it will make you smile!) and you will realize how ...
