With the talents of Chuck Jones, Boris Karloff, and Dr. Seuss combined, there was almost no way this could be anything but an instant classic. Boris Karloff narrates and stars as the odious Mr. Grinch, the sinister green monster who plots to steal all the Christmas presents in the town of Whoville. All goes well with his dastardly plan until little Cindy Loo Who (who was no more than two) gums up the works with her innocent Christmas spirit. Jones directed, with Karloff supplying the sweetly sinister narration and voice of the Grinch. The story is from the book by Dr. Seuss. Thurl Ravenscroft (of "Tony the Tiger" breakfast commercial fame) provides the memorable bass singing voice for the tune "You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch." Filled with close attention to comic detail, memorable characterizations, and delightful wordplay, this is essential holiday viewing for the whole family.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Dr. Seuss wrote the children's book that was the basis for this animated Christmas feature. Boris Karloff, yes the monster guy,does the wonderful narration. The Grinch hated Christmas and hated the Who's who lived in Whoville and he decides to spoil it for them. On Christmas Eve he arrives when they are sleeping dressed up like Santa. He steals away all their presents and decorations so they won't have a Merry Christmas. (You've got to love the expressions on the Grinch's dog). Since this is a Christmas story, it has to have a happy ending. It does. The Grinch has a change of heart and makes it right for Christmas morning. The children love the nonsensical lyrics and words of Dr. Seuss. The animation was well done as well. Throw in a few catchy songs and you can see why it is so popular. ... "Horton Hears a Who" , an additonal feature, is also included, although O.K., it isn't of the same caliber as How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This is a Christmas DVD that will be a tradition in your house for years to come. What's not to like? There's goofy looking animated characters, words that don't make any sense, and the people of Whoville and the Grinch get to celebrate Christmas after all. Any child would like it!

I would expect that most "50-somethings" are very familiar with this Christmas cartoon, produced long enough ago to ensure that the word "Christmas" could be mentioned without offending someone. During my own childhhod and teen years, the "big three" Christmas shows that HAD to be watched were "A Charlie Brown Christmas," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." The purchase of this DVD had its genesis in the arrival of several grandchildren, who are coming to the age where sitting with "Papa" and "Nana" and watching this cartoon will rekindle sentimental feelings for the oldsters. The characters are, of course, come from the fertile imagination of Dr. Suess, and they are endearing. The almost comical negativity of the Grinch, the plight of his poor, abused ... The story is one of human nature, forgiveness, and redemption, as the Grinch tries to "stop Christmas from coming," only to suddenly realize, at his expected moment of triumph, that Christmas is about love and togetherness and celebration of the spirit. The memorable theme song reminds us regularly just how foul this Grinch is, serving to enhance the power of his "aha!" experience while perched in his sleigh on the top of a snowy mountain. Animation has become more sophisticated since this picture was first made, and the cynic can look at it as "primitive" and "silly," but I rank this redemption story as one of the best family cartoons ever produced.

A CLASSIC...
This is Dr. Seuss' finest moment (in a career of MANY greats). The story is a classic and the animation and songs are known and loved by millions (how many of you are singing "You're a Mean One Mister Grinch" in your head right now?!?!) And Boris Karloff as the narrator is the perfect icing on the cake.
