In March 2005, Neil Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. Four days before he was scheduled for a lifesaving operation, he headed to Nashville, where he wrote and recorded the country folk album PRAIRIE WIND with old friends and family members. After the successful operation and recovery period, he returned to Nashville that August to play at the famed Ryman Auditorium, once again gathering together friends and family for this special performance. He also brought along Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme, who in addition to making such hits as THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and PHILADELPHIA has made such successful concert films as STOP MAKING SENSE (with the Talking Heads) and STOREFRONT HITCHCOCK (with Robyn Hitchcock), as well as videos for the Pretenders and Bruce Springsteen. NEIL YOUNG: HEART OF GOLD begins with brief interviews with many of the participants, but then it's all about the music. Supported by his wife, Pegi, country star Emmylou Harris, the Nashville String Machine, the Memphis Horns, the Fisk University Jubilee Singers, and musicians Ben Keith, Spooner Oldham, Rick Rosas, Grant Boatwright, and others, Young leads an ever-changing collection of musicians through nine of the ten songs from the remarkable PRAIRIE WIND, an album that poignantly deals with love and loss, life and death. Young even gets reflective at the show, telling moving stories from his past in between playing guitar, harmonica, piano, and banjo. He also delights the crowd with a long set of encores of past acoustic hits, going through his vast repertoire to find memorable songs that examine life and death as well, including "The Needle and the Damage Done," "Old Man," "Comes a Time," and Ian Tyson's "Four Strong Winds." NEIL YOUNG: HEART OF GOLD is an extraordinary document of one of the world's greatest songwriters staring death in the face--and letting the music save him.

    Neil Young--Heart of Gold (2006, DVD) Perfect Title!

    I had seen part of this wonderful DVD on HBO & couldn't wait to see it ALL! Being a fan from early on, I would say, without a doubt, this is some of Neil's best work to date. So much deep feeling, meaningful songs, the musicians are true experts. Neil's expert playing of the guitar, banjo & piano really shines. He speaks candidly before singing most songs, telling you about himself , family & friends. He's relaxed, deep into the music, & it's clear he loves what he is doing. Emmy Lou Harris adds a lot to this fine production. This is a very personal, intimate work. It's stunning to watch everyone take a bow at the same time when the show ends. I didn't want it to be over. I have purchased another copy, so I will always have one. There is two kinds of this production, one being the show ...

    Good, great gift.

    In the fall of 2005, Neil Young returned to the sound and style of his iconic 1972 album Harvest with Prairie Wind, a set of ten songs which look to America's past and future accompanied by sweet but rough-hewn country-rock. The album was written and recorded after Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, and shortly before he went into the hospital for surgery for the condition, Young played a pair of special concerts at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, the original home of the Grand Ole Opry, where he performed the Prairie Wind album in full along with a set of old favorites. Filmmaker Jonathan Demme was on hand to film the shows, and Neil Young: Heart of Gold was culled from the best moments of those two concerts, as well as interviews in which Young talks about his life and music. ...

    Neil Young Heart Of Gold DVD

    I have always been a Neil Young fan. When I heard Heart of Gold was released I could'nt wait to see it. I was thrilled with the results. I swear Neil gets better with age. I just loved the songs he sang from Prairie Wind. The Special Features Dvd with interviews from Neil and his band members and friends was excellent. Professionally, Neil is one of those rare performers that can play country, rock, blues,or just about anything and do it very well. Personally, Neil seems like a down to earth kind of guy, with old fashioned values, love for the land, and pride. Don't hesitate to see Heart Of Gold. You'll love it!! S. Rice Blandon Pa.

    Neil Young at his best

    This is one incredible film. I am speaking to Neil Young fans. If you don't watch the credits, you miss another performance. The film is dedicated to his daddy - whom had just passed. I about busted a tear as I saw his eyes swell up talking about it. Growing up with the music of NY and the groups he played with, I never really thought of him as a regular guy. This film makes him one. OH YA, he plays Hank Williams, Sr., Martin guitar (ca 1951). HW played it at the Opery in 1951 and Neil bought it around '71. He stated that he was glad to have it back in at the Opery. Great Music, considering that Neil wrote the new music and played it live for the first time in a 10 day period.
