The Pursuit is Over for "Julia and Julia" by Kathleen T
The movie "Julia and Julia" itself captivated me at a time when in graduate school and needed some great excitement and a bit of a twist...This movie was that and so much more! It was produced when making the now "garden variety mental breakdown movie" was quite taboo and then to top that off,throw in several "willing" high octane stars like Kathleen Turner, Gabriel Byrne(Stigmata,Collateral Damage) and then here comes Sting(Dune) as a jealous lover in one of those lives she is "dreaming up? Now you have the ingredients for one hell of a psychologically charged-dreamy-surrealistically tragic-I do not have a clue where the reference point(reality) is in this movie kind of film ride. The cinematography was so mesmerizing, captivating and many times got in the your way of figuring out the ... I know the paper that reported on it, gave a two page spread. After all of the reporting was over, the newspaper put the question to the reader, "What was the reality side of the movie?" I thought it was a compliment to all involved in the making of this film to pull this off in 1987. "Julia and Julia" also gives you the eerie feeling as the director Guiseppe Rotunno) places you first person as Julia(Kathleen Turner)to try help let you experience and decipher in real time with her what is happening... and with her husband Paolo(Byrne) and six-year old son, 'distances" them when there to give that disconnected feeing of being complete strangers to people you well know, making her experience more solitary and more frightening. She also has to contend with which crazy life she at current happen to be living was real, and yet there are two. I have been trying to obtain a copy of this movie, rent it, and when I did find a box in a rental store...the tape was missing! Look it up in respective Filmography s, it is usually missing from all. Until recently I have been given a sniff of finding and buying a copy of this film. I found three VHS copies for sale on Ebay. The used(2) were affordable; the new one went for a crisper! so you know that person knew what they had. If smart they would keep it! It is a keeper...and if you do find one...buy it, you will not be unsatisfied!

I loved it
Kathleen Turner is my favorite actress. I own all her movies except 2 of them. Julia and Julia was one of those. I was waiting for this movie to come out on dvd, but could not wait to see it, so I bought the VHS copy. At first you are a little thrown off by the High Def, but you get past that 15 minutes into the film. I really enjoyed watching this movie, it really keeps you guessing. Kathleen was wonderful in this movie as she is in all her movies. Kathleen is what made this movie work for me. One of the reason why I love Kathleen, is because she is one of the very few actresses in my opinion that can morph into her characters. When an actor or actress becomes well known, All you see is the actor playing the part and not the character, which ruins the movie for me. With Kathleen, I only ... The best example of this, is in the movie Crimes Of Passion, where she plays two characters at the same time. I am not sure how she managed to pull this off? But, she made the two characters look completly different. Most of the time when a person puts on a wig, they still look the same. There hair is just different. With Kathleen it was like seeing two different people. Julia and Julia is about-- Julia, an American woman living in Italy, who becomes depressed and traumatized after her husband Paolo is killed in a car accident on their wedding day. Six years later, Julia inexplicably finds herself sliding in time between two different worlds where in one she is still struggling with her grief over Paolo's death, and in the other world she is married to Paolo who's alive and well with their five year old son, where Julia is having an affair with a British gentleman named Daniel, in which the frequent supernatural sliding between these two worlds threaten to drive Julia crazy when she begins having difficulty in telling them apart and learning which world she is currently living in.

She has an actual photo taken in the world that she cannot return to. We love the way the worlds cross over - it is an intense love story & the woman is driven to murder in order (in her mind) to keep the world in which she is the happiest. Ultimately, she loses that world & people think she is insane. The world in which her true love (husband), her son and her parents-in-law are all well, alive and happy. The "texture" of the movie gives a surrealistic feeling throughout.
