Product Information

Rediscover this Newbery Medal-winning classic, a favorite of generations. Strawberries--big, ripe, and juicy. Ten-year-old Birdie Boyer can hardly wait to start picking them. But her family has just moved to the Florida backwoods, and they haven't even begun their planting. "Don't count your biddies 'fore they're hatched, gal young un!" her father tells her. Making the new farm prosper is not easy. There is heat to suffer through, and droughts, and cold snaps. And, perhaps most worrisome of all for the Boyers, there are rowdy neighbors, just itching to start a feud. The land was theirs, but so were its hardships. Teachers, grandparents, and homeschooling families continue to reach for Lois Lenski's Strawberry Girl. As one fan commented, a reason for its continued success is that it's "a touching, realistic tale of the power of neighborly love and kindness."

Reviews
A delightful story that chronicles the struggles and achievements of a Floridian pioneer family. The story, historical foundation, dialogue, characters, and illustrations combine to create a timeless tale everyone will enjoy. The Boyer family relocates to the backwoods of Florida and plans to begin farming strawberries. Their new neighbors resent the Boyers and conspire to stir up trouble. Soon a feud erupts between the two families. The simple compassion of one woman ultimately saves both families from the looming hatred and destruction. Lenski paints a picture of Florida backwoods life with tales of frontier schools, social gatherings, and neighborly kindness.

  • Strawberry Girl by Lois Lenski

There are many Lois Lenski books I've enjoyed reading as a kid in the 1950s, later to my children, and now to my grandchildren... but this may be my favorite. This author always wrote stories for children about particular regions or times in America with a mission similar to that of Michener's books for adults. Though I'm happy that this story deals with some of the history of my adopted state, Florida, "Strawberry Girl" would be my favorite anyway because in its themes it respects and trusts the intelligence of the juvenile reader in ways few of Miss Lenski's comtemporaries ever did. The story poses real, sometimes startling issues of responsibility with adult tensions and dangers that the family of our protagonist has to negotiate. I wish I had more than just 2 thumbs to point up.

  • Strawberry Girl by Lois Lenski (1995)

An excellen author, wonderful stories, not just this one. It has special meaning to me because it is set in Florida in the late 1800's. My grandfathe lived in Tampa when he was a little boy and I feel like I am reading about the time he lived in. It is a wonderful tale of a family and their struggles, needs, wants, loves and a little girl who knows what she wants and goes for it. Good reading for all ages, one of my favorite books when I was growing up.

  • Enjoyable and informative read

Excellent author. One can learn much about different areas of the US by reading her books.

  • STRAWBERRY GIRL BY LOIS LENSKI

I LIVE IN FLORIDA AND APPRECIATE HISTORY. THIS STORY IS BASED ON THE EARLY SETTLING OF FLORIDA. I CAN RELATE TO SOME OF THE THINGS DONE IN THE STORY LIKE CANE GRINDING AND ESTABLISHING A CROP TO BECOME WEALTHY, WEATHER AND WILDLIFE AFFECTIN YOUR EXISTENCE. IT'S A WONDERFULLY REALISTIC JOURNAL SO TO SPEAK. I CHECKED IT OUT AT MY LOCAL LIBRARY AND LOVED IT SO MUCH THAT I WANTED TO PURCHASE ONE FOR MY LIBRARY AT HOME. THE ENTIRE 4TH GRADE CLASS IN MARION COUNTY SCHOOLS READ THIS STORY IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN AND THE CHILDREN TODAY WERE ENTERTAINED BY IT AS I AM SURE MANY GENERATIONS PAST HAVE. THE LADY THAT WROTE THIS BOOK WAS BORN IN THE 1800'S.

  • Fun Regional Read by Lois Lenski

This was one of my favorite books when I was in the 4th grade. I wanted to reread it and this is a good copy and it’s fun to read it again.
