Reviews
"Sam Harris's elegant little book is most refreshing and a wonderful source of ammunition for those who, like me, hold to no religious doctrine. Yet I have some sympathy also with those who might be worried by his uncompromising stance. Read it, and form your own view, but do not ignore its message." Sir Roger Penrose, emeritus professor of mathematics, Oxford University, author of The Road to Reality, "A breath of fresh fire." Wall Street Journal "This combination of ruthless argument with polemic designed to provoke (he describes the Catholic Church as the "institution that has produced and sheltered an elite army of child-molesters") will further delight Harris' supporters and infuriate his critics." San Francisco Chronicle "Harris has consolidated his disdain for religion in a withering attack on Christianity, delivered in the form of an open letter. . . . Mr. Harris wants to grab your lapels and give you a good shake. . . . [he] makes a good case for a new and intellectually honest conversation about morality and human suffering." NY Observer "As infidels go, Harris is an astonishingly successful one. . . . Letter is a readable, exhortatory screed." Newsweek "Bracing." The Nation "[ Letter to a Christian Nation ] crackles with a focused, potent energy. . . . [Harris'] arguments resonate with a satisfying common sense." Contra Costa Times "Sam Harris's elegant little book is most refreshing and a wonderful source of ammunition for those who, like me, hold to no religious doctrine. Yet I have some sympathy also with those who might be worried by his uncompromising stance. Read it and from your own view, but do not ignore its message." Sir Roger Penrose, emeritus professor of mathematics, Oxford University, author of The Road to Reality "Reading Harris' Letter to a Christian Nation was like sitting ring side, cheering the champion, yelling 'Yes!' at every jab. For those of us who feel depressed by this country's ever increasing unification of church and state, and the ever decreasing support for the sciences that deliver knowledge and reduce ignorance, this little book is a welcome hit of adrenalin." Marc Hauser, Harvard College Professor, author of Moral Minds: How Nature Designed Our Sense of Right and Wrong "I can't sign my name to this blurb. As a New York Times best selling author of books about business, my career will evaporate if I endorse a book that challenges the deeply held superstitions and bigotry of the masses. That's exactly why you should (no, you must ) read this angry and honest book right away. As long as science and rational thought are under attack by the misguided yet pious majority, our nation is in jeopardy. I'm scared. You should be too. Please buy two, one for you and one for a friend you care about." Unsigned, New York Times best selling author "It's a shame that not everyone in this country will read Sam Harris' marvelous little book Letter to a Christian Nation. They won't but they should." Leonard Susskind, Felix Bloch Professor in theoretical physics, Stanford University, author of The Cosmic Landscape: String Theory and the Illusion of Intelligent Design "We all know about good things that have been derived from bad ideas. Modern religions serve many social goods such as health care for the poor. The problem is that is also services many reprehensible ideas. Harris blows the whistle, pointing out the religions of the world are based on human generated vengeful stories. Read this book and you decide your stance for the future." Michael S. Gazzaniga, Director of the Sage Center for the Study of Mind, University of California, Santa Barbara, author of The Ethical Brain "Sam Harris fearlessly describes a moral and intellectual emergency precipitated by religious fantasiesmisguided beliefs that create suffering, that rationalize violence, that have endangered our nation and our future. Synopsis
From the author of the "New York Times" bestseller "The End of Faith" comes a new, hard-hitting, and impassioned book that continues his fight against the rigid adherence to Christian religious literalism that is altering the face of this nation., "Thousands of people have written to tell me that I am wrong not to believe in God. The most hostile of these communications have come from Christians. This is ironic, as Christians generally imagine that no faith imparts the virtues of love and forgiveness more effectively than their own. The truth is that many who claim to be transformed by Christ's love are deeply, even murderously, intolerant of criticism. While we may want to ascribe this to human nature, it is clear that such hatred draws considerable support from the Bible. How do I know this? The most disturbed of my correspondents always cite chapter and verse." So begins Letter to a Christian Nation … www.samharris.org

  • Honest and hard hitting

Sam Harris hits a home run with this honest assessment of Christian fundamentalism in America today. He takes a hard look at our all too willing propensity to accept our early endoctrinations and live with their edicts without question. To understand the tone and content of this book it is important to note that he wrote it in response to the many Christians who criticized his first book The End of Faith (a bestseller in 2006). Fifty years from now, Harris, his books, debates and lectures will likely be considered the early beginnings of enlightenment.

  • Truth via Special Delivery

This book should be read by every American though those who are religious will probably condem it without examination. In this book, Mr. Harris makes a well stated argument against religion based on and endless amount of irrefutable evidence. Perhaps because of the internet's facilitation of the distrubition and exchange of information throughout the world community, people are finally waking up to fact that all religions are based on myths, have doctrines that are in conflict with reality, encourage animosity between people, and are dangerous. This book and Mr. Harris's other book "The End of faith" will help people see the light of reason and help them to free themselves from the chains of religion so that they will be able to live a fuller, more productive, and happier life.

  • The end of quibling

Mr. Harris, with many like minded persons of intellect, humility and scientific examination, has long been an independent evaluator of thought and practice in the so-called advanced western world. This book is a brilliant digest of his earlier work, "The End of Faith." Even the self-righteous narcisitic believers in their own importance [i.e. God watches me every second of my life because I'm so terribly important] will find it difficult to avoid his examination. Granted, they will continue to attack his work without ever having read it; still, should they make the mistake of reading it -- their isolated, virtual world will be destroyed. ADS

  • Letter to a Christian Nation

Fantastic book! I recommend it to all people. Sam Harris is highly intelligent. He has the answers the world needs. He is logical in his thinking, and we need more people like him. In fact, I'd like to suggest to him to read the Bible books of Daniel and Revelation, figure the prophetic visions by giving each variable its true answer, and then compare these answers with history. This may give him something new to think about. Leaders of religious organizations do not know what proofs are. I am convinced that Sam Harris does. However, I do not agree that evolution has been proven as Mr. Harris says. I'm agnostic, leaning a little more toward a god because of biblical prophecies. I do not believe that the Bible as a whole is from God. Most of it has been distorted and fabricated. ...

  • A lot of complaining to an audience that would never listen.

Sam Harris spends about 90% of this book recycling arguments that have been made before and in most cases made better by others. His fixation with separating liberal Christians from their more "conservative" counterparts makes many of his arguments less credible as most Christians don't make the distinction themselves. While I agree with most of his arguments and general premises I found myself skipping through this to get it over with as it came off as the angry complains of an old man who had stopped trying to find an actual solution. The one solution he provides is that Christians should stop believing in God... lol. Well buddy good luck, because this book ain't gonna convince anyone that isn't willing to listen.
