Reviews
"[An] excellent novel. A lovely and moving portrait of society's outcasts living in an unforgiving and barren but harshly beautiful landscape. Even as Dogtown's population dwindles, the book affirms the essential humanity of its poor and stubborn residents, for whom each day of survival is a victory."--New York Times Book Review, "[W]hat [Diamant] has created'is the overlay of a modern sensibility on an imagined past. Diamant's descriptive passages are as eloquent as a Congregationalist'and her theme -- that life teems even as it dwindles -- has all the more power for its subtle, unsentimental articulation."--Washington Post, 'Anita Diamant gives us a character who doesn't get from life exactly what she wants but who creates her own happiness, nonetheless. Judy Rhines lives life fully by embracing every moment and appreciating the uniqueness of others and her own integrity. Both Judy and the haunted New England landscape evoke something of the world of Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and his Hester Prynne, who also defies convention by following her own passion. The Last Days of Dogtown transports the reader to a fascinating time and place where even the dogs are compelling characters."-- Sena Jeter Naslund, author of Ahab's Wife and Four Spirits, "Anita Diamant'brings an obscure piece of American history to life with great clarity in The Last Days of Dogtown. The story is one of delicate hope and turns out to be a quiet tribute to love's power. Diamant captures with imagination and credibility the people of a unique place and time. In casting her own spell over the Dogtowners, Diamant offers her readers the opportunity to appreciate the humanity that transcends both."--Miami Herald, "[A] superb historical novel. With its cast of thoroughly engaging characters, Diamant's gripping tale is so bittersweet and haunting as to make one weep."--The Baltimore Sun, "The book has a compelling page-turning pull, as Diamant movingly illuminates an eclectic society based on both "a live and let live" detachment and a deep mutual dependence. Diamant beautifully ties these collective stories together, with spare yet vividly descriptive prose that transports the reader into the New England of Hawthorne and Melville."--Boston Globe

  • An Exquisite Historical Novel Worth Reading

Anita Diamant's The Last Days of Dogtown is a radical departure from the biblical setting of her best-selling novel, The Red Tent. Her backdrop for this melancholy tale is the windswept shores of Cape Ann, Massachusetts in the early days of the nineteenth century. The declining hamlet, nicknamed Dogtown by detractors, is home to a pack of semi-feral dogs and an eclectic group of residents too stubborn, too poverty stricken, too worn down, or too old to relocate to nearby Gloucester. A group of widows, witches, spinsters, whores, abused and neglected children, freed slaves, and one particularly odious villain populate the ramshackle hovels that dot the ruggedly stark landscape. At the center of a series of heart-wrenching sagas is Judy Rhines, a kindhearted maiden who harbors a secret ...

  • Last Days of Dogtown

This isn't one of those books that you just can't put down. I finished it with the hope that it would all come together for me at the end (it didn't). It was just pathetically sad stories that left me with many unanswered questions. I'd often have to go back and read sections again just to keep the characters in mind. This book feeds the reader the spagetti noodles without the meat sauce. There were sections that held my interest; however, this is an average read. If you're interested in a excellent Anita Diamant book, read The Red Tent!

  • Great value for my money

Have been touring this area. The book actually was in better condition then expected for previously read. Was a good value.
