Product Information
Continuing in the vein of their wildly successful SCARY MOVIE series, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer turn their comedic minds to the romantic comedy genre, resulting in DATE MOVIE, yet another rapid fire assault of send-ups of both recent and classic film moments. Utilizing MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING as the framework on which all the other jokes hang, Alyson Hannigan (AMERICAN PIE) is Julia Jones, the obese daughter of a not-so Greek family. Upon meeting Grant Funkyerdoder (Adam Campbell)--a suave British customer at the diner owned by her hummus-obsessed father (Eddie Griffin)--Julia decides to get massive liposuction in an auto garage (in a sequence based on MTV's PIMP MY RIDE) as a means to make herself more attractive to him. But this, as we know, is all merely a setup for a nonstop barrage of gags based on films such as HITCH, MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING, MEET THE PARENTS/FOCKERS, SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, THE WEDDING PLANNER, and more.A direct descendent of the AIRPLANE and NAKED GUN films, story is secondary in DATE MOVIE---what matters are the gags, and they come fast and furious. If one joke doesn't work for you, there's always another one just around the corner. Friedberg and Seltzer know their audience, and they make the most of their PG-13 rating--crudity abounds, with jokes about bodily functions figuring heavily in the mix. In her first leading role, Hannigan makes an appealing heroine (even transcending the fat suit she wears for for the first quarter of the film), and Fred Willard and Jennifer Coolidge, in an extended riff on Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand's FOCKER roles, add some class to the proceedings.

“Date Movie” is one of those movies made with a ‘damn-the-critics, full-speed-ahead’ ... “Date Movie” is one of those movies made with a ‘damn-the-critics, full-speed-ahead’ attitude – and that’s fine. Not all movies are made to please the people who watch them for a living. But the thing is, I don’t have a problem with raunchy comedies, fart jokes, and other bathroom humor. I do however have a huge problem sitting through a ‘comedy’ movie that’s just not funny.
Truth be told, I was actually looking forward to “Date Movie” because the premise sounded like it could lend itself to some pretty amusing scenes. I also admire the film’s star, Alyson Hannigan, from her days playing a lesbian witch on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” I’m not too proud to admit I laughed my butt off at “Scary Movie” and since this comes from – as they make clear in the advertisement – two of the six writers of that parody of horror films, I was prepared for comedy aimed at teenaged boys.
What I wasn’t ready for was a movie in which the filmmakers thought including a scene where the romantic leads beat up a homeless man was great comedy. What did a spoof of those disgusting bum fight videos have to do with skewering romantic comedies? Absolutely nothing.
The plot (if it can be called that) involves a hugely overweight, lonely woman named Julia Jones (Hannigan) who is desperate for a husband. Awaking from a nightmare in which she's left at the altar by Napoleon Dynamite, Julia visits a matchmaker, gets a “Pimp My Ride”-style makeover/liposuction treatment, and winds up on the film’s version of “The Bachelor.” She ends up with the handsome British hunk, Grant Fonckyerdoder (Adam Campbell), after he mows down her competition with a shotgun. I kid you not.
From there the movie rapidly deteriorates. Julia takes Grant home to meet the parents (played by Eddie Griffin and Meera Simhan) who really want their daughter to marry an African-American, Greek, Japanese, Indian, Jewish man, and then Grant takes Julia’s family to meet the Fonckyerdoders (Jennifer Coolidge and Fred Willard). Exactly when are things supposed to get funny?
Throw in a pooping cat, a Michael Jackson look-alike who tries to pick up a little boy (yeah, that’s comedy gold), and even a large-bootied woman who’s supposed to remind us of Jennifer Lopez (that's original) and you've basically got the highlight reel from "Date Movie."
“Date Movie” feels as though the writers wrote a scene and turned to each other and asked if it was nausea-inducing.
The film lampoons “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “Shallow Hal,” “Mr and Mrs Smith,” “Hitch,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” “When Harry Met Sally," and "Pretty Woman," as well as a few films that are by no means romantic comedies (“Lord of the Rings,” “Star Wars Episode III,” “Kill Bill”), and the Paris Hilton car washing/hamburger eating TV commercial. With all that rom-com and other assorted parody material ripe for the picking, you’d think the filmmakers could have come up with something – anything – that works. That would be giving the guys behind “Date Movie” way too much credit.
Well, ok I'm sure some people are gonna disagree and that's fine. In my opinion this ... Well, ok I'm sure some people are gonna disagree and that's fine. In my opinion this movie wasn't great. It had great actors.
It had great scenes. But when you pile on that many tasteless jokes, and have the "skits" run as long as they tend to do
it waters it down a little much. Like the scene with the chicken win, or the scene that introduces the cat. Again this
movie has some REALLY funny people and some great stuff. It just should have been a little faster. If it takes too long
to get to the punchline, it's not as effective. This, to me, leaves little to no replay value. Though it does have 'heart.'
But, that's just me and I'm sure there are people who LOVE this movie.
The movie is beyond god-awful and you will be sorry.
The twisted minds of two of the six screenwriters behind "Scary Movie" – ... The twisted minds of two of the six screenwriters behind "Scary Movie" – Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg – this time skewer the romantic comedy genre. The new film tells the story of hopeless romantic Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan), who has finally met the man of her dreams, the very British Grant Funckyerdoder (Adam Campbell). But before they can have their "Big Fat Greek Wedding," they'll have to "Meet the Parents;" hook-up with "The Wedding Planner," and contend with Grant's friend Andy – a spectacularly beautiful woman who wants to put an end to her "Best Friend's Wedding."
It’s official the parody/spoof movie is officially dead, six feet under, pushing up daisies, sleeping with the fish, taking a dirt nap, deceased, dead as a door nail, no longer with us. Does it seem like I am beating a dead horse, because that is exactly what the movie does and I wonder if they even get the irony of the fact that they literally beat a dead horse in the film. Who’s idea was it to take all the funny moments from good movies, make them unfunny and then throw them at the audience without making any attempt at structuring them or having the movie have any story arc at all other than these really bad parodies and spoofs. I just find it hard to believe that they couldn’t see somewhere in the filming of this trash that it was a piece of crap and that maybe they should try some humor of their own rather than spoofing truly funny movies with very unfunny actors and parodies. What crowd is the movie aimed for because I don’t even think the teenage crowd would bother with this piece of garbage.
The movie is beyond god-awful and they can just write it off as oh well it’s a spoof and you just didn’t get it. But they are wrong I did get it, I did get the fact that the two writers have no talent of their own and so they must rely on parodies of other movies because they couldn’t come up with an original concept of their own. I do get the fact that nobody has gone after the romantic comedy in parody form but I also get they did a pretty crappy job at making the movie even remotely funny. I have seen good spoofs from Airplane to Hot Shots and this movie was not one of them, it wasn’t even half as funny as Scary Movie and those movies really aren’t that funny except the first time you see them. So what is the point of the movie, there is none, there is no comedy, there is no drama, there is no action but there is a heist and that’s when the ticket seller takes your money and lets you go into see the movie.
Poor Alyson Hannigan she made her fame with one line of dialogue from the American Pie series and I am afraid she is forever going to be trapped into these terrible unimaginative roles. If you ever saw the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer you are aware that she really isn’t that bad of an actress, she’s not great ether but she can hold her own but it’s that one line of dialogue that will forever define her career and the one line she will never escape and the reason she will continue to make really bad movies like Date Movie. Adam Campbell is a newcomer and what an auspicious way to start his career but the thing is if he can ever distance himself from this movie maybe people will forget it was his debut. Honestly how many people remember Bruce Willis in Blind Date, because ten years down the road you won’t want people to know you were in this atrocity. As far as Eddie Griffin goes its time to get out of Hollywood dude, I think you rode the fame of a 7-UP
Bummer on this one, not quite as funny as I was hoping! I love Alyson, she is always ... Bummer on this one, not quite as funny as I was hoping! I love Alyson, she is always a blast to watch...hello, huge Buffy fan here! But the scenes not with Alyson and some of the jokes just fell flat for us! Just not as funny as we had hoped! There has got to be better roles out there for our ex-scooby!
Date Movie is Funny at times but mainly dissapointing!
I expected this movie to be ... Date Movie is Funny at times but mainly dissapointing!
I expected this movie to be incredibly funny, but it just doesn't deliver. I don't understand how they made this spoof movie wrong, but they did.
I think the main problem was that they focused the movie on spoofing too many new movies. I think if they make Date Movie 2 it needs to focus on the older chick flicks and love stories.
Final Verdict:
2/5
Rent or Buy?: Worth a rental, but in my opinion, nothing more.
