Product Information

It's World War II, and Kay's husband, Jack (Ed Harris), has just joined the military. Kay (Goldie Hawn), like so many women of the period, decides to go to work to support the war effort. She finds a job at an airplane munitions plant, where she meets Lucky (Kurt Russell), a trumpet-playing hunk who is unable to serve in the war because of health problems. The two embark upon a romance after a lengthy courtship, which lasts a number of years. But when Jack returns home injured, he doesn't appreciate the news that his wife has been enjoying herself with another man. Jonathan Demme's smooth directorial hand is revealed by the unsentimental generosity with which he handles the supporting characters. Look in particular for Christine Lahti's standout performance as Kay's factory buddy, Hazel--a performance that notched her an Oscar nomination. SWING SHIFT is the rare World War II movie that focuses on the home front; it is particularly sensitive to the period's music, place, and mood.

Swing Shift Tells the Other Side of WWII & With Dignity
The entire cast of Swing Shift did a great job taking the audience back to the era of WWII in the states, where women went into the factories to make an income and support the efforts of our country. There was fun too including going to bars, riding motorcycles, and dancing. But the phrase Absence Makes the Heart Grow Stronger isn't always true for young ladies who are working in a male environment. Goldie Hawn shows that she can play drama as well as comedy in this movie where she plays the wife, Kay Walsh, of a sailor, Jack Walsh (Ed Harris), and reluctantly has an affair while he is gone. She is also working in an airplane factory as a Rosie the Riveter. Her lover, Lucky, played by Kurt Russell dominates the movie, since he is a shift leader in the factory as well as a ... The music of the 1940s lights up the movie and makes it far more enjoyable. For viewers who weren't around in the 1940s, this is a great ticket to see how our grandparents or parents lived during the war. They did not just sit at home listening to the radio!

World War II Homefront Comedy/Drama.
"Swing Shift" is a marvelous film recapturing a bygone era of a truly United States of America. Swing Shift which has a nice score of 40s era music which is my kind of music. The director really does well capturing the mood of the 40s when we were a people united trying to save the world from one nasty brutal tyranny. The women are shown to have a really tough time both mastering the defense jobs they were doing and taking a lot from the men still working there. Nice wartime story about the women left behind, the loneliness, their new independence, and a world outside of their homes. There is the expectation that this is all temporary. When the war is over, they will be let go, the men will return to their jobs, and the women will go home where they belong. Meanwhile the women have been ... Title was perfect.
I've always loved this WWll story. Acting was great, plot interesting. The movie portrayed what it was like to live and work at that time in history.
