Backbeat...The beginning of the Beatles
I bought this DVD having previously purchased the VHS version a few years ago. I don't know how this movie escaped my attention when it was in the theater, but I accidently found the VHS copy in a second hand shop. Being a lifelong Beatles fanatic, I couldn't resist anything that might bring back that Beatles magic, even if only for an hour or two. What a great movie! Get ready to take a trip back to Liverpool and Hamburg during the late 50's and early 60's as the Beatles become the band we all remember. This is one of those movies that leaves you wanting more when it's over. The primary story line is focused on the relationship between John Lennon and his friend Stuart Sutcliff. The band (pre-Ringo) heads to Germany where they're all exposed to several things that have a major ... I bought this DVD having previously purchased the VHS version a few years ago. Stuart and Astrid fall in love. When John and Stuart are on the recieving end of a bar fight, Stuart takes a blow to the head which leaves him with painful reoccuring headaches. The authorities discover that George is under age and a result, the band gets deported back to England. The boys return to work in Germany after George turns 18, and Stuart and Astrid resume their relationship. As the band progresses musically due to a grueling schedule, Paul becomes increasingly frustrated with Stuart's lack of musical ability. He airs his complaints to John who defends Stuart, and threatens to leave the band himself if the others kick Stuart out. As the band ends their second tour of Hamburg, Stuart decides to stay behind with Astrid, leaving Paul to assume duties as the bands new bass player. On their next trip back, they are greeted at the train station by Astrid, who informs them that Stuart has passed away as a result of his head injury. Saddened by his friend's death, John vows to continue his dream of becoming a rock and roll star, and the rest,as they say, is history. All the characters are spot-on in their portrayal of the band members at that point in time, giving you a true sense of the struggle they went through to get to the top. The recreation of the seedy clubs along the Reeperbahn in Hamburg such as the Bambi Kino and the Top Ten and all of the activities within, has the effect of making the viewer feel as though they were actually there. This film is a must see for any fan of the Beatles, their music, or anyone interested in what was happening during that period in time, prior to the "British invasion" on the U.S. music scene. Two thumbs up from this critic!!

Very in depth story of the early Beatles
Saw this on TV,cut version, but it interested me so much I bought the regular version of it. It tells you about how the group was formed in the very early years and the passion that was in John Lennon to have the 'best' band around.It also centers on the very close friendship of Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe, who was a original member.There is nudity in the beginning,because that's the way it was with the very young Beatles being hounded by all the young girls at the time.Great songs,great story line and if you are a Beatle fan..you gotta see this.Saw this on TV,cut version, but it interested me so much I bought the regular version of it. What a great TRUE story of the Beatles before they became famous and John Lennon's best friend Stuart Sutcliffe. What Lennon was to music Sutcliffe was to art and if he had'nt died probably would have been a major artist today. It's also a love story so the ladies enjoy it as much as the guys.
