Should be required reading
Police work is tough... physically and mentally. This book does a good job of breaking down some of the common issues officers and their families face. It is also applicable to military service and that surprised me... I saw many of the described emotional changes in my son who has been in the military for s short time. Having the information and knowing what the cause of some of the emotional changes may be has been very helpful. I sent it to him and he said it impacted his cynicism and has allowed him to interrupt the cycle simply by understanding the root cause and knowing what steps might help him understand he emotions he is facing. It’s not a cure all...and police work and military service is still incredibly hard... but knowing that others have felt what you are feeling and what ... A cheatsheet for survival in Law Enforcement in a short easy read.
A must read for those in law enforcement. This book will give you more information about how the job can effect you as well as your family. More importantly it reveals how to deal with the stressors that are applicable to all in the field. It is relevant for the new officer, veteran officer as well as the retired officers.

This is a great book for anyone working in any area of law enforcement. Great for people who have family members in law enforcement/military/etc. Quick read!

Absolutely Brilliant.....
"Buy this book" After going through a 2 hour emotional survival class and hearing about how this book explains EVERYTHING that a law enforcement officer and his/her loved ones need to know about the emotional life of a law enforcement officer, during this year's annual block training week, I immediately ordered this book, just to see what all of the hype was about. It turns out that this book is practically impossible to put down after first opening it up to read it. The further along you read, the more and more you will begin to "see yourself" through the teachings of Dr. Gilmartin's book. I very highly recommend this book to all law enforcement officers, their loved ones, people that are curious about the work of a law enforcement officer, and even anybody that may not trust the police, ... Practical guide.
I ordered this book for our son who works with the MN State Patrol. Found out he has several copies of it already as he often works in crisis debriefing.
