To those who say we need useful information to be able to make better decisions about things that affect our lives, this series on the food pyramid is a bold affirmation. The author, Helen Frost, with the help of consulting editor Dr. Gail Saunders-Smith, performs an outstanding service to very early readers interested in healthy food choices. All of the books identify where the different food groups lie in the food pyramid. Illustrations of each group, including grains, fruits, dairy products, meats and proteins, and fats, oils and sweets, are brimming with positive examples and an abundance of smiling faces. Adults should approach these books in a satiated state, as temptations lurk on almost every page. The size of the printing is helpful to the beginner who is trying to match words and food samples. Three additional sections in each book of the series stand out to provide the reader with more appetizing routes to knowledge. The first is "Words to Know," which identifies terms used specifically with respect to the food group being discussed. Of special interest is the description of a "serving," which tends to be smaller than my more generous nature would allow. It would be easy to say, "wee portions for wee readers," but the ones given are more in line with current nutritional labels. The second section, "Read More," lists three or four other reference works that discuss the food group in question, all of which are of recent vintage. The "Internet Sites" section will be of interest to the large proportion of younger readers who are adept at using PC software. Consequently, they provide a good opportunity to introduce such readers to finding Web sites and combing them for ideas about their favorite foods. Most of the sites I scanned are worthwhile as either games or presentations of further uses of the food in the body. The two books that do not address specific foods--Eating Right and Drinking Water--are directed at the themes of eating properly and getting enough water, respectively. To be healthy, one must eat right, and that title makes its point clearly in terms of the value of each food group and the daily amounts of each we should consume. Along with the volume about fats and sweets, Eating Right raises unambiguous warnings about minimizing calories from these sources. The value of clean drinking water has taken on a life of its own, now more than ever before. Those who are aware of the potential perils of bottled water will notice that all of the photographs are of tap water. Parents of young children who are eager to read will be rewarded as their children learn to be eager to eat right as well.
