Based on actual diary accounts of several teenagers following the L.A. riots, FREEDOM WRITERS is the story of an idealistic teacher's attempts to make a difference in the lives of her at-risk students. Located in gang-ravaged Long Beach, California, Woodrow Wilson High is a hotbed of violence due to a voluntary integration program which brings Black, Latino, Asian, and White students together. Rather than having the desired effect of creating healthy diversity, this program breeds constant war between all parties involved, the result being daily gun shots, constant racial slurs, and gang violence.Played largely by young unknowns, the freshman class in question is both naïve and wise beyond its years. While never having heard of the Holocaust, these kids are well-versed in the pain of poverty, the legal system, and death. Despite being up against unthinkable violence, devoted first-time teacher Erin Gruwell (Hillary Swank) never gives up, slowly bonding with her class of at-first unreachable pupils, breaking down their tough exteriors and getting at the real people beneath through requiring the students keep daily journals. Meanwhile, a strain is put on Erin's marriage as her student involvement gradually takes priority over her personal life. The intensity with which Erin relates to her work threatens her husband (Patrick Dempsey), who in seeing Erin's transformation, is reminded of his own stagnancy. Thanks to a catalogue of films including STAND AND DELIVER and DANGEROUS MINDS, any film about inspiring teachers risks feeling redundant and preachy. But writer/director Richard LaGravenese manages to put a fresh spin on this already familiar formula thanks to powerful performances by Hillary Swank, Imelda Staunton, and several newcomers. While slightly predictable, FREEDOM WRITERS critiques the public education system in an ultimately moving way.

    Inspirational true story

    This was the first truly inspiring movie I’ve seen in ages. Though lessons can be learned by watching just about any movie out there, I feel that this particular film would speak to almost anyone - regardless of race, gender or age. Based on the diary entries of students that attended Woodrow Wilson HS in California, this movie artfully recounts the dedication one teacher had for her students. Her rigid determination to get through to her class full of kids on probation, juvenile delinquents, and gang members, before they became the dropouts the school board expected, or worse…lost their lives on the streets, was admirable.     Freedom Writers

    This is a very well written TRUE story about a dedicated young teacher against both a classroom of young thugs at war with the world around them and school system filled with disallusioned teachers who are just putting in their time. The movie was well cast, the acting was excellent and Hillary Swank was, as is the norm for her, outstanding in the lead role. I bought this DVD because some pictures are just to good to only watch one time. I would recommend adding Freedom Writers to every serious movie addict's collection.

    Freedom Writers DVD

    I love this movie!! Freedom Writers is based on a true story. Soon after the Rodney King incident & rioting in the Los Angeles area, 1992-1994 is where this story begins. A lovely girl with a big heart chooses to begin her teaching career in Long Beach, CA. That area filled with gang violence, drive bys and terrible home lives was a challenge to say the least, and the school test records were not good. This teacher works her way into her student's lives and creates a safe place to them, becoming a family somewhat in the class room. A real "feel good movie", shows how much 1 person who decides to make change CAN! I lived in Los Angeles during that time frame, also had my first son there. I thought it would be a nice piece of history to own to show him what where he was born looked ...

    INSPIRING

    I LOVED this movie! The whole story is a movie that has come from real life experiences. This movie has shown society how you can change the low self esteem this younger generation faced with unbelievable misfortune on a daily basis, can change their lives with the caring dedication of one adult. A group of young men and women started out not caring about life and ended up wanting to be a power of example to their teacher and family who showed they cared about them. Through sacrifice and a unconditional love, plus much of her own personal life, their teacher changed the mindset of a large group of individuals causing them to care about someone other than themselves and want to do better for their future.

    A High power drama movie that can change ones life

    As Erin Gruwell's sister I can attest that Freedom Writer's is a dead on account for what really happened at Wilson High School. What does it matter that there have been similar "teacher/student " success stories in the past? I hope this film encourages even more movies with this genre. Public education success stories give people hope. Erin and many of the 150 Freedom Writers worked very closely with writer/director Richard LaGravenese to get their story right. And they are thrilled with the results. How often to you hear that in Hollywood? Please watch this movie with an open heart and I promise you that you will feel wonderful when it is over.
