"Don't Expect a Shoot 'Em Up Western" or "My Great Grandfather knew The Real One"...
What appeared to be a Very Interesting Film (when viewing the trailer), I found to be rather slow with a lot more dialogue than action. Considering this was a film by Ridley Scott about Jesse James, and based on the novel of the same name, the photography,wardrobe, and sets made up for the Overly Long Interactions between characters. With only a portion of Historical Accuracy, I found Pitt's Portrayal of James as a Loner and Sociopath more "Artistic Freedom" than what I believe to be true. One item revealed in the film that is rarely written about or known, is that Jesse James had a portion of his Middle Finger missing on his Left Hand. This was told to me by my Great Grandfather, who at Ten Years Old actually viewed James' Body in 1882 (he died at 100 Years Old in 1972). I also recall him ... A great story well told.
Pitt and Afleck deliver immersive roles. There are a few historical slips of narrative/dialogue but those don't impact the characters' credibility. There are moments of stellar photography (I've added stills of my visually favorite scene). DP Deakins shows why the Coen brothers (in my top three directors list) often go to his talents. A truly impressive film. T

Assassination of Jesse James DVD
While I love Westerns and Brad Pitt is one of my fave actors. This movie was a little slow for my taste. The movie didn't pick up until almost the end. I have to say though that Casey Afleck was superb as Bob Ford the coward who killed Jesse James. He gave a very strong performance and shows tremendous talent for the bad guy. While he isn't as sexy as his brother Ben, I think he still has sexy potential. Keep an eye out for this kid and check out Gone, Baby Gone he gives a good performance there too.Sam Rockwell as Charlie Ford was equally strong in his performance and I have become a big fan of his. A film of stunning quality; a film of varying debate
I purchased this copy of "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" as a gift for a friend, already having a copy I own that I bought at full retail value. The friend was ecstatic upon receiving it. The movie, I find, is a subject of great debate among fans of the genre/actors. I, personally, think it is a triumph for the genre and for films in general. The cinematography and set design are stunning, telling a story in and of themselves. The editing, score, and costumes are rich and complex even while being simple and threadbare. Casey Affleck did such an impeccable job with the character of Robert Ford that I get the creeping willies every time he's on screen, and Brad Pitt, who usually feels a bit overdone in his typical fare, exuded the same kind of quiet, ... The supporting cast really made this movie shine for me, though, with such subdued - and at times over-the-top - performances that really pulled me into the era and had me believing in the characters completely. I think where most critics, professional and amateur, get caught up is with the pacing. While it is a western, yes; about famous outlaws, yes; it is not an action film. It is a deep and intricate biopic on Jesse James as a character and as a man. Don't go in expecting explosions and gunfights and chases - you'll get a few, anyway, but nothing quite so much as the louder more brash fare of "3:10 to Yuma" or "The Quick and the Dead" - go for the characters, for the storytelling quality, and for the simple beauty of the film itself. I frequently hear the film described as "slow" - well, eye of the beholder and all that. I think the quiet, sometimes deathly silent and still nature of the film lends to the title splashed on the cover: "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." This is a movie about a very specific event, with two very specific characters, and I found the pace of the film eerie, intense, and at times terrifying. Not in the manner of a horror film, but just in the sheer fact that you grow so attached to these characters that their fates become things you either dread or rejoice over. I would most definitely purchase this film again, for any lover of Old West history and personages, and any lover of a well done beautiful film, period. I rate the whole experience very, very highly.

A Fairly Accurate Story
Part of the film was a little confusing, and that was in the middle when the one man was killed. Also, one of the towns mentioned never existed, so that historical aspect is wrong. It was a good film otherwise and it kept me interested.
