À propos de ce produit

Product Information

In the spring of 2000, Robert Schimmel was riding high. He'd won the Stand-Up of the Year Award, his HBO special was a huge hit, and his sitcom had been picked up. And then it all came crashing down. Diagnosed with Stage III non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, he was told he would have to undergo chemotherapy immediately. The sitcom was dumped and the fire of his white-hot career started to go out. But Schimmel never lost his sense of humor, his knife-like edge, and most of all, his passion toentertain. Indeed, it was his basic need to laugh-even if the only people around him were suffering from cancer and the room he was playing was the Mayo Clinic infusion center-that carried him through his ordeal. From his colorful banter with nurses and other patients during chemo, to his hilarious conversation with a wig salesman, going for the laugh was Robert Schimmel's survival mechanism. Alternately laugh-out-loud funny and profound, Cancer on Five Dollars a Day is an honest account of how one man's face-off with a deadly disease helped him better understand himself.

  • LOVED THIS BOOK, READ IT IN ONE DAY

I love Richard Schimmel. Saw him when he was in Pittsburgh, PA 10 years ago when I was going thru cancer for the 2nd time. I got this book because I am going thru it for the 3rd time. I laughed, I cried, absolutely the PERFECT book for someone going thru cancer, shows you can laugh while tears roll down your cheeks. Some parts were so funny, I just cracked up. It showed pictures of him in the hospital bed, so sick, but still cracking jokes with the doctor. I was disappointed it wasn't longer. I could have read another 20 days worth! Get this book for yourself or a loved one. You will be glad you did.

  • The Best Read I Ever Had

Every so often a book, a movie, a show comes along that can't be explained. It has to be experienced for oneself. "Cancer on Five Dollars a Day" by Robert Schimmel (with Alan Eisenstock) is one of those experiences. This is a book that left me laughing, crying, and thinking all at the same time. I actually had to force myself to put the book DOWN! It's not that often that I can say that. It's not very often that a book like this comes along. I think people should take the time to stop and read this book. I believe that it'll help them with their daily lives. It certainly did with mine.

  • Title caught my attention.

I enjoy Robert Schimmel's humor and my brother is experiencing a recurrence of his non-Hodgins lymphoma. Made me laugh and cry and really emphathize with some of the things he went through the first time that I didn't know about. I hope Mr. Schimmel is lucky enough to have many years of remission.

  • Schimmel never disappoints.

I've been a Robert Schimmel fan since I saw Unprotected on HBO. I heard about this book when it came out, and was excited to read it. This book is very inspirational, and funny as hell. It's full of typical Schimmel dick and sex humor that is always hilarious. He goes through hell, but cracks jokes all the way.

Great book. Excellent perspective on a horrible situation. Made me laugh a bunch. I highly recommend this book.
