    • Intelligent Spy Thriller

I thought this novel took a while to get going; the set up is complicated, though there is a lot of conflict right off the bat as one of the operatives of an office-based British intelligence officer goes missing. It's worth perservering as the officer realizes what has actually happened, the ways in which he himself is and is not culpable, and that he must either run or become the scapegoat of a spy scandal. The book is also very informative about some lesser-known ethnic struggles in the former Soviet Union, and this gives the book a unique character. It also explores the psychological makeup of spies and the types of relationships they have with others, and this makes it a novel about human behavior as well as a good spy thriller. It's certainly not a genre-formula book.
