Awesome Chaplin film.
Few films really should be marked genius. This is one of them. I believe I read somewhere that this film was inspiration to many of the later physical comedians that followed. I can see why, but what's more is the bravery to make such a film lampooning Adolf Hitler. What makes it so genius is that while it still have the physical comedy that made Chaplin so famous, it also had the verbal comedy that accentuated the physical. It was not the gross out, perversion, or the potty humor that marks so much of today's films. This one film stands out as one the best. Chaplin after this one and Modern Times must have wept for how do you top such incredibly wonderful and works of genius.Few films really should be marked genius. This is one of them. An iconic piece of movie history
Charlie Chaplin took a real risk with this movie (making a satirical comedy about Hitler) and regretted having made it after the world became aware of what was happening in Germany in the late 1930s. That being said this is a great piece of cinema showcasing not only Chaplin's genius but also the use of the technology that was available for film makers in 1939. The film has been beautifully restored and digitized. A real treat is the inclusion of footage made by his brother with what at the time was the most advanced in home movie cameras. The movie itself is in black and white but the backstage footage with the home movie camera is in color. Brilliant movie by a genius selling at a very reasonable price
This DVD The Great Dictator is offered at a much lower price than anyone else. In my opinion it is the very finest work of a man who was widely considered to be a genius, Charlie Chaplin. It is both hysterically funny and very informative at the same time. After the end of WWII Charlie Chaplin was asked whether he would have made this picture (in 1941) if he had known the extent of the holocaust going on in Europe and he answered that he would not have made this movie. I for one am glad he did and there were about 12 members of my family who died in the concentration camps. With regard to his genius its worth noting that in addition to his acting he wrote the screenplay, directed and produced the movie and he wrote all the music. Terrific movie
The movie was made in 1940,when Hilter was in power.It was funny,he captured Hilters idiosyncrasy to a T. chaplins portrayel of the dictator is awesome to say the least.Especialy the last scene of the movie I enjoyed the speech because the words ring true today.
