Professors Fischl and Paul explain law school exams in ways no one has before, all with an eye toward improving the reader's performance. The book begins by describing the difference between educational cultures that praise students for "right answers," and the law school culture that rewards nuanced analysis of ambiguous situations in which more than one approach may be correct. Enormous care is devoted to explaining precisely how and why legal analysis frequently produces such perplexing situations. But the authors don't stop with mere description. Instead, Getting to Maybe teaches how to excel on law school exams by showing the reader how legal analysis can be brought to bear on examination problems. The book contains hints on studying and preparation that go well beyond conventional advice. The authors also illustrate how to argue both sides of a legal issue without appearing wishy-washy or indecisive. Above all, the book explains why exam questions may generate feelings of uncertainty or doubt about correct legal outcomes and how the student can turn these feelings to his or her advantage. In sum, although the authors believe that no exam guide can substitute for a firm grasp of substantive material, readers who devote the necessary time to learning the law will find this book an invaluable guide to translating learning into better exam performance.

    A Good Investment

    I bought this book the summer before my first semester of law school. I read several chapters before classes began and just that little bit of information really gave me a better understanding of the classes. I felt prepared for the material and the structure, and confident that I wouldn't be confused around exam time. I am still in my first semester, so I have not yet been able to put the book's instructions to a real exam yet, but I'll let you know how it goes this December! The first half of the book can be tedious and sometimes confusing if you haven't had more than a few weeks of law school. You'll initially get discouraged and start thinking that there's no way that you could ever do what the authors are asking you to do, but the second half of the book will clear all those ...

    Getting to Maybe - extremely useful and insightful

    Extremely useful and insightful. Loved being able to get into the professor's heads. I want to go to law school this fall and was really needing a step up and Iif my pre-law prof hadn't recommended this book, I think I'd be truly lost. I might be lost anyway when I get there, but at least I had a heads up from these wonderful authors. I appreciate them so much! Great book. Rough reading, but worth it.

    Great material.

    If you have doubts about whether law school is learnable, this books provides assurance and covers much-needed material information to relive you of your doubts. It touches on the many moving parts of law school that must be known prior to entering law school, so you can be a successful law student.

    useful information, alternatives to the standard irac

    this book was an alternative to the "irac" method that everyone swears by. i like the emphasis on learning material first and learning how to present your answer second. well written, easy to use.

    Not great if you like good reading

    I'm getting ready for law school and bought a number of books to give myself an idea of what lies ahead. This was the last book I read, which ended up being great timing. While all the other books were engaging, this one was a chore to read. If I had read it first and thought that it was representative of law school, I would have been worried. Read anything else.
